Night Shift

655 Words
Shift change has started and Hilda still hasn't posted the jobs to the website. 'When did things get so hard!' she thought.  "Need help?" A sultry voice interrupted her train of thought. She looked up from her computer screen and glanced towards her door. "Hi Madge! No, but thanks for asking." She smiled.  Made was a long time resident. Like most, she was still very capable of taking care of herself. But wanted to take it easy in her silver years. "Thanks for wearing the head wrap outside of your room, Madge. I truly appreciate it. Sun glasses aren't necessary, are they?" Hilda asked with her face twisted a bit to try and see Madge's face.  "Hilda, my dear." Madge replied, with a slow almost hissing voice. "You know I need the tint."  "Ah, yes." Hilda nodded. "Again, thank you for asking. I'm just trying to get the right words in this ad so I can get some good help here. Some new faces!" "Oh, yessss. New facesss would be nicccce." Madge smiled. "Interesting." She turned and slowly walked from the room.  Hilda yelled after her "They are going to be here to help me out Madge, not to benefit your curiosity. Let's not go there with the new hires, please!" "Very well," Madge said back without a bit of interest. Hilda shook her head and sat back in her chair. "That woman should really be on the basement level." After an hour, Hilda sits back in her seat with her arms behind her head. A pleased look on her face. "This should do." She whispers through her smile. "Do what?" Jessie says standing behind her. Hilda slowly turns around and looks at Jessie. "How did you get back there?" She asked.  "I didn't scare you did I?" He asked her disappointedly "You didn't answer my questions, Jessy. How did you get behind me?" "Secret passage in the bookshelf." He replied with a defeated look on his face. "I've lost my touch."  "I could smell you." Hilda told him and turned back to her computer. "Go wash up." "Oh yeah. I was finally able to check on Frank. He said the new nurse was touching his things. The stuff he has on the shelves. Said she was touching them. So, he threw pooh at her."  "Are you telling me that Frank threw his feces at the nurse?" Hilda said with her eyes closed, still facing her screen.  "No, that's not what I said. I said he threw pooh. But it wasn't his."  Hilda stood up and walked towards the door. She stopped and turned to "Jessy, get out of my office and never use that door again." Turning back she slowed, sniffed. "Then why do you stink?"  "He wanted to show me what he threw. I told him it wasn't necessary but he insisted. I dodged the first two throws. He threw the last one low." "Get off my desk. Don't touch anything. Get out." Hilda said and left the office headed towards the elevator. "Pooh, indeed." she muttered. Hilda pressed the basement button and waited. "Headed downstairs?" Peircy asked. Hilda jumped. "I wish you would stop doing that to me!" She swatted at him. "I'll ride with you." He told her as he dodged her swats. "I have a mess to clean up in Frank's room from what I understand." "Yes, that is where I'm headed too. Frank has got to stop being that way. He's an adult for heaven's sake!" Hilda stood with her arms crossed in front of her. Peircy giggles. "What is it?" She looked over at him and asked. "Aren't they all by now?" he answered. She shook her head and stepped through the door and on to the elevator. "Going down?" Peircy said in his best butler accent. "Push the button!" Hilda scoffed and smiled when Peircy looked away. 'Yes, I have a great little family here.' She thought.
