Chapter 31

Nora POV It’s Monday 8:30AM and I’m heading downstairs where Colin is waiting for me. I step outside in my light green dress, white blazer and nude pumps. My hair is in a messy updo and I kept my make-up natural for today. A smile appears on Colin’s face as soon as he sees me walking to the car. He steps out to open the car door for me and gives me a quick kiss on my cheek, making me blush. “Good morning.” “Morning, beautiful.” He says as I get in the car. Once he gets behind the steering wheel and we pull up in traffic Colin lays his hand on my thigh. “Are you excited?” He asks while steering with one hand. Damn, he looks sexy like that. Wearing a dark blue suit and a black shirt with a blue tie, his hair is perfectly styled with wax and his beard is neatly trimmed. I’ve seen his type of men in magazines and on i********: but I never expected that I would be sitting next to someone like that in their luxurious SUV or let alone moving in with him, ever. “Yes, very.” I smile and lay my hand on his hand that’s resting on my thigh. I really am excited, it seems like everything is falling into place. A new job, away from that creep called Jack. I still get uncomfortable when I think about what happened that night I met Colin and his brothers. A new place to live, although I still miss my little apartment. And a nice guy in my life, with two brothers who give me that elderly brother feeling I still miss since my brother Jason left fifteen years ago. And then we’re not speaking about what Colin does to me in a physical way yet, how he makes me feel things I haven’t before and how he seems to have a way to get me soaking wet in no-time. “Did you pack all your stuff yesterday?” “Yes, it’s just a few bags of clothing and my make-up stuff. I have nothing beside that.” It stings a little when I think about it. “Good, then we’ll pick them up after work.” Colin squeezes my thigh in comfort. After fifteen minutes we park underground of a skyscraper and Colin gets out to open my door. After he grabs his briefcase from the backseat we go to the elevator and get in. “What can I expect when we get there?” I ask him, nerves kicking in right now. “A henhouse.” Colin laughs and I’m not sure if he’s being serious or just joking around. The elevator stops on the ground floor and when the doors open there’s like ten people waiting to go up and they all try to squeeze in. Colin leans in to me and whispers. “Don’t worry, it’ll get a lot less crowded soon.” And it doesn’t take long before the elevator stops again and half of the people who just got in step out on their destined floor. We keep going up in silence and stop another three times to let other people out, until we arrive at the top floor. The doors open and the first thing I see is a large banner against the wall ‘DAVIES ARCHITECTURE’. I follow Colin out of the elevator and when we turn the corner they’re is indeed a lot of people present. Some of them are standing in small groups in the coffee corner, having a little chat. Others are already caught up behind they’re computer or on the phone. It’s a very open workspace, with floor to ceiling windows on three sides. Colin puts his hand on my lower back and guides me straight across to what seems like an individual office, screened off from the rest with walls from frosted glass at the bottom half and blinds at the top half. “Goodmorning, Mr. Davies.” A man says when we pass him by and Colin nods his head. I look around when we walk past all those people and most of them smile kindly or nod their heads, others are too busy to even notice us passing. Right when Colin puts his hand on the door handle a young blonde jumps in front of him and lays her hand on his, preventing him from going in. “Goodmorning, Mr. Davies.” She says as she blinks her eyes rapidly and smiles widely, her eyes only on him. “Morning, Cassie. Can I help you with something?” Colin asks, friendly. “I was just wondering if you could take a look at these sketches I drew for the pool house for Mr. and Mrs. Harris?” She still doesn’t take her gaze off of him and almost pushes a stack of papers into his hand. “Cassie, the pool house for the Harris family is Rita’s responsibility. She’s the one to make the final decisions before it goes into development.” I hear a slight sigh in his voice and when I see the disappointment on her face I feel a bit sorry for her, she looked so excited to show it to him. “Ok, I’m sorry for bothering you. Is that the new intern?” She asks, looking at me. “No, this is Nora. She will be my new personal assistant.” Colin explains and her facial expression changes immediately. “Nice to meet you.” I reach out my hand to shake hers and she hesitates for a moment. “Likewise.” She fakes a smile and I hear the hostile undertone in her voice. “Good luck on your first day here.” She adds to it before she leaves. Colin opens the door and lets me in first. His office has a large, white oak desk with a huge computer screen on it standing in the middle together with a camel colored office chair and two smaller seats in front of it in the same color. Behind his desk are also floor to ceiling windows looking out on the skyline. In the corner is a large table stacked with papers what seem like architectural sketches. I walk to the window to take in the view. “It seems like you have a preference to be at the top of everything, am I right?” I ask him. “Yes, you are right. And there is something else I would like to be on top of.” I hear him whisper in my ear as he’s standing right behind me. “Let’s get to work first, shall we?” I turn around and smile at him, making him laugh. “So determined, Mrs. Young?” “Yes, I told you I want to work for what I got. And since you bought me like half a new garderobe and the fact that I will be moving in with you tonight, I owe you.” I raise my brow at him. “Ok, first things first then. Let’s sit down and go through the details before we sign the contract.” He suggests to me to take a seat and sits himself in his office chair. He points out the details of my responsibilities and salary before he hands me the contract and a pen to sign. I read quickly through the paper in front of me and sign it at the bottom. “Here you go, Mr. Davies.” I shove the paper back to him and his fingers slide over my hand as he takes it from me to put it in a binder. “I’m looking forward to our cooperation, Mrs. Young.” He smiles and shakes my hand formally. “I’ll show you your workspace.” He gets up and walks back to the door. We go back into the large room with all of the desks and work islands. “I like an open workspace so everyone can interact with each other and I have a good view of everybody. That corner is where my head architects work their magic, assisted by the junior architects and interns. They all work together in teams, based on the project that they are given. The other side of the office is where the contracts are signed and the financial business gets handled. And in the middle is, as you can see, the coffee corner.” Colin guides me through the workspace and introduces me to everyone. They all seem very nice and kind and give me a welcoming feeling. Cassie is the only one who doesn’t even bother to look up when we arrive at her desk. We end up at a desk right outside of Colin’s office. “This is your desk, next to my office in case we need each other.” I sit down behind my desk and observe everything. Colin gets behind me and leans in to use the computer mouse to show me where I can find everything in the software. “If you need help with anything, just come to my office or call me on my phone. I have my first meeting at 11AM, I’ll come get you when we need to leave.” He says and walks back into his office. I decide to start off right away and in no time I’m caught up with all the numbers and data. “So, you are Mr. Davies’ new assistent hu?” I get pulled out of my drive to see a young man with brown, curly hair and glasses leaning on my desk. “Yes, I’m Nora. I don’t think I have seen you yet? Nice to meet you.” I reach out my hand. “You haven’t. I came in a bit later, my daughter was sick this morning and I had to drop her off at my mom’s before I could come to work. Nice to meet you too, I’m Ethan.” He shakes my hand with a genuine smile. “I hope she feels better soon. Are you an architect here?” I ask him. I think I’m making my first friend here. “No, no. I’m not that creative. I’m the financial advisor, I’ll be here to help you with the bookkeeping.” Ethan explains and it comforts me to know that I get along with one of the people I have to work closely with. Colin arrives at my desk and greets Ethan. “Goodmorning Ethan, is your daughter feeling a bit better already?” Colin asks him with sincere interest which warms my heart. “No, not really. We don’t know what’s going on with her. I think I’m gonna try to get her to a specialist for further examination.” Ethan sighs. “Let me know if I can help you, you know I have connections.” Colin taps him on his shoulder. “Thanks, boss. I’m going back to work. I think you’ve got yourself a good assistant this time.” Ethan smiles, looking at me and it’s making me blush. Ethan goes to his desk and starts working. “Come on, let’s leave for the meeting.” Colin says and I get up and gather my stuff. We go to the elevator and go a few floors down to where the general meeting rooms of this building are apparently. “I see you’ve made a friend already?” Colin smiles at me. “I don’t think he’s a friend so quickly, but he was very nice to me.” I smile back. When the elevator stops I follow Colin into the meeting room where we greet everyone and take place. During the meeting I take notes and hand out documents to the other men around the table. The meeting lasts for about one and a half hour and Colin invites me to have lunch together. “Wouldn’t that seem awkward? Taking your personal assistant to lunch?” I ask him as we go down with the elevator. “They don’t need to ask questions. It’s my choice who I take to lunch with me. You can get lunch with your coworkers tomorrow, but for today I want to keep you near me.” He gives me a quick kiss on my cheek before the elevator stops and a few people get in. I decide to leave it at that and to just enjoy my time together with him. After lunch I spend the rest of the day behind my desk, trying to catch up on any outstanding assignments for the bookkeeping. At 5PM everyone starts to pack their stuff and leave the workspace, one by one. When everyone is gone Ethan comes to my desk with his backpack hanging on one shoulder. “Are you coming along? I think your work is done for today, isn’t it?” He asks and I panic for a moment. Colin and I agreed to keep our romance quiet, at least for now until we’ve figured out on what’s going on between us. “Mr. Davies asked me to come by his office after work to update him on the outstanding assignments. It will take a while, you don’t have to wait for me. Get home to your daughter.” I smile and he nods. “You’re right. See you tomorrow, Nora.” He shouts as he steps into the elevator. I get up and knock on Colin’s office door. “Come in.” I open the door and peak my head through. “Hi.” I smile with blushing cheeks. “Is everyone gone home?” He asks me as I close the door behind me and I nod. “Good, come here.” I walk towards him and he shoves his chair backwards so he can pull me onto his lap. “Did you have a nice first day?” Colin kisses my cheek and wraps his arms around me. “Yes, I think it went well. I’m almost caught up with the outstanding assignments.” I smile relieved. “This afternoon was a living hell for me today.” He sighs and I look at him with a confused look on my face. “Having you so damn near me and not being able to touch you like I want to was hard.” I chuckle at his confession. “Does that mean you’re going to fire me, Mr. Davies?” I run my finger over his chest, through his shirt. “Don’t tease me like that or I will have you bend over my desk before you can say my name, baby doll.” His voice sounds husky and for a moment I want to keep teasing but then I remember we’re in his office. “As much as that thought is appealing to me, I would like to get my stuff and have something to eat.” I laugh and when I try to get off his lap he pulls me back in, hugging me tightly. “You’re right, let's go and get your stuff.” He gives me a quick kiss on my lips before he lets me go and I can get back to my feet. Once we’re in the elevator we both feel the tension but a few floors down the elevators stops to let some people in so we have to behave ourselves. There’s no one down in the garage so I get in Colin’s car without any worries and we drive off to Eliza’s apartment to get my stuff.
