Chapter Four: Matteo

Matteo stepped into the deserted warehouse, his footsteps echoing against the concrete floor.
The place was almost completely empty, except for the few men standing around the room. His guards remained silent, their attention fixed on the man tied to the chair in front of them.
The man looked exhausted and frightened. His shirt was disheveled, and there was a small cut above his eyebrow.
Matteo stood a few feet away, his expression unreadable.
“Mantris.”
One of the men immediately stepped forward.
“Yes, boss.”
Matteo glanced toward the man in the chair.
“We got what we needed?”
Mantris nodded. “Everything. Names, locations, accounts. He told us everything.”
The frightened man shook his head desperately.
“Please… please, I can explain.”
Matteo slowly looked at him.
“You already explained.”
“I didn't betray you!”
Matteo's jaw tightened.
“You had one job.”
The man lowered his eyes.
“I was desperate.”
Matteo said nothing for a moment.
Then he reached into his pocket and pulled out a handkerchief, calmly wiping the blood from his knuckles. He handed it to one of his guards without looking at him.
“Burn that.”
“Yes, boss.”
The guard immediately walked away.
The man in the chair began pleading again.
“Please, Matteo. I have a family.”
Matteo's expression remained cold.
“So did the people you betrayed.”
Silence.
Matteo turned toward Mantris.
“Handle it.”
Mantris nodded once.
“I want this finished quickly.”
“Yes, boss.”
Matteo walked away without another word.
Several guards immediately followed him.
The moment he stepped outside, the cool night air hit his face. He paused beside the black car waiting for him.
His phone vibrated.
He pulled it from his pocket.
One message.
UNKNOWN NUMBER: Your wife has arrived at the estate.
Matteo stared at the screen for a few seconds.
His wife.
The word felt unfamiliar.
He slipped the phone back into his pocket.
“Let's go.”
The car door opened.
Matteo got inside, and two of his guards entered the vehicle behind him.
A moment later, the engine roared.
The car sped away from the deserted warehouse and disappeared into the darkness.
