CHAPTER 7: Xavier’s POV
We finally reached home and finished our daily routine. I went to bed early—I wanted to wake up early tomorrow. I fell into a deep sleep with a faint smile on my face; we were finally more than just friends.
That night, my memories returned. I remembered the accident. I finally knew who I was.
I realized then that my life isn't safe for a family. I have one now, especially Cassandra, and I love her so much that I can't let anything bad happen to her. I went to pick her up from school today and saw her with that young, handsome Black guy. I didn't like the fact that she was friends with him. She explained everything that happened—how he was her ex-best friend, Mike. That didn't make it better. I let it be, but I still hated that he was so much younger than me.
We finally got home, ate supper, and she went to bed early. I went to my room to find some peace of mind and think about my next move. I eventually reached a conclusion: I was going back to my underground empire to meet my gang. I needed to protect her and her family from any future disasters. My head was pounding from overthinking, so I gave up and went to take a shower. I laid on the bed and drifted off.
The next day, I woke up feeling refreshed. I took my bath and went downstairs. The family of three was already awake. Cassandra and her mom were in the kitchen making breakfast. I sat down and waited.
"How are you?" I asked Cassie.
"Fine," she replied simply, squinting her eyes at me.
"What?" I asked, puzzled.
"You're acting weird," she said.
I rubbed my eyes in response. Her mother looked at us and said, "Make sure you don't break her heart, or else you'll regret it." She spoke with a clenched teeth, and I liked how overprotective she was. It meant she would protect Cassie no matter what.
"Don't worry, I won't," I said without hesitation. She smiled at me and gave a thumbs up.
Cassandra stood beside me and placed the food on the table. I turned to look at her and got distracted. She was wearing a black, knee-length dress with a sexy long slit. She also had a black leather jacket over it. Her face and hair... oh my god, she had light makeup on her face and pink lip gloss on her lips. Her hair was tied up in a ponytail with two strands framing her face. She was about to turn eighteen, but her figure was already maturing. I didn't want to imagine how she would look in her mid-twenties. She already had an hourglass shape.
"Xavier, I’ve been calling you for about ten seconds now. What happened?" Cassandra asked, waving her hand in front of me.
I blinked a few times and rubbed my neck awkwardly. I could feel the heat building up inside me. "Nothing," I whispered. "I was just thinking about something."
No, Xavier. Stop thinking about such things, I told myself.
We ate breakfast in silence. I wasn't telling them the truth about myself or my returning memories. I wanted to protect them, but I didn't want to hurt them by leaving. "I'll take a double shift today, so I don't think I'll be back early," I lied. I hated lying to them, but I had to.
"Oh, so you won't come to pick me up today?" Cassie asked, a hint of sadness at the edges of her eyes.
"Yeah," I replied apologetically.
"It's okay, don't worry," she said, trying to cover her sadness.
I escorted her to school and then left. Instead of going to work, I went back to the house and climbed up to the attic. I was looking for the suit I had been wearing the day I was attacked. I found it neatly tucked away on a student mattress. I checked the pockets for my wallet, and in a small, hidden pocket, I found a black card.
I took out my phone and dialed the number on the card.
"Hello?" a man's voice came in, cold and distant.
"It's me. I'm Xavier Asher," I said nonchalantly.
"B-b-boss? Is... is that you?" the man on the other end stuttered, his voice filled with surprise.
"Where are you?" I asked.
"I... I will come pick you up," he said, and I could hear shuffling on his end like he was in a hurry to meet me.
"I will send you the address," I said, my voice turning cold. I ended the call and sent him the location: 89 Denzel Street.
"Got it, boss," he replied back immediately.
