Outside. On the street, it was quiet. So quiet that it was almost deafening when compared to the loudness of the rooms just beyond the now closed doors. Kane swung around and faced her, his hands shaking slightly, as he grumbled at his own stupidity. Why had he agreed to talk to this girl. Why was he alone with her again?
"So you know Micah?" She peered up at him through long lightly coloured eye lashes and Kane cleared his throat. Thinking glumly to himself that it was no surprise she'd have picked up on that one. It wasn't like he had been very careful with the details either. Not to mention Micah's reaction to him probably didn't help hide much. As she continued to stare at him though he knew he had to say something, anything was better then the silence.
"Briefly." He settled on saying. Mostly just to fill in the space of time that was just so clearly awaiting an answer. "But not that well." He was grappling at walls of sheer ice and he could feel the resistance. It left him at a loss of what to even say next. What did she already know?
"He seems to think you are bad news." She arched a pale brow at him, before continuing on. "Which makes me wonder then, how do you know him?" She stopped walking and turned back around to face him. "Care to fill me in?" The wind had picked up around them. It was lifting the loose stands of her hair, making them dance around her face enchanting him with every movement. Her scent lingering around him like a constant reminder of what he stood to loose.
"I don't know what to tell you exactly." He confessed, biting down on the inside of his cheek, rather roughly. Cursing at his own inability to think coherently when she was around. Zoey stared at him questioningly. Her lightly coloured eyes, now appearing almost like dark sapphire stones, were flickering across his face. As if she would find the truth she sought written somewhere on his skin. Maybe she would, he couldn't tell what she'd see there. If anything at all.
"How about the truth?" She suggested lightly. Glancing away from him and back down towards the slowly emptying parking lot. The one just down the road form where they stood. "Can you do that?"
"No." He answered truthfully and the irony wasn't lost on him there. "But if you really want to know.." He shoved his still shaking hands deep into the pockets of his jeans, hoping that the familiar action would help ground him. It didn't help, not really.
"I do." She jumped in, her eyes returning to his once again, and that simple look was all it took. Kane felt like he was free falling, right into something he didn't know what. Perhaps his own doom. It was certainly possible from how it made him feel.
"Okay, I'll tell you." He decided it was only fair, since she was sort of involved in it all now anyways. "We met, here actually. About three month ago now." He paused and rubbed at the five o'clock shadow running across his jaw. "No that's not right, it was probably just two." Zoey stated at him skeptically. The look urging him to continue on with it. He hesitated and it was obvious, even to himself that he was stalling for time.
"Yea and?" She pressed, her tone betraying her deeper emotions to him.
"I slept with him." Kane hung his head low, it wasn't in shame. He hardly ever felt that. It was more that he was worried with how she'd react to this. What she'd say. what she'd be inclined to do.
"You slept...with Micah?" She repeated it once more a little quieter. Then with a sharp intake of breath she glared up at him. Her eyes turning to ice before his very own.
"You, it was you. Wasn't it?" She pulled away from him, until then he hadn't noticed just how close they had drifted together. They always seemed to. Like they were two magnets being pulled to one other.
"Me, what?" Kane blinked back, in what was genuine surprise at her reaction. Out of all the ways she could have responded, he hadn't thought this would be it. "What did he tell you that made you react like that?" He pointed to her face, which still looked significantly redder in complexion then it should have been.
"Just that you used him. Oh and then left. Without a goodbye, a thank you. With nothing." She hissed, any playful flirting gone from her tone. She was as cold as her gaze was iced.
"That's what he said?" Kane groaned aloud, rubbing a hand over his eyes in frustration at the entire ordeal. This was exactly why he didn't do this type of thing for.
"Isn't that what happened?" Zoey demanded. Her tiny frame straightening up taller, with her fist balled at her side. She looked like she wanted to punch him and to be fair he probably deserved it. At least a little bit.
"Well yes, I left but.." He tried to defuse the situation, but he was beginning to see that Zoey wasn't the type of person to be put off of something, not once she thought she was in the right of it.
"No buts, you left him and that is terrible enough." She lashed out. Swinging herself right around. "I think I've heard all I needed to." She started to walk back towards the club, her strides quick and fueled with resentment at him, at herself even if she were being completely honest. Kane had half a mind to let her just keep going. But that voice, the one he hardly ever paid attention to was now screaming out loud. Screaming that if he let her go that would be it and he found he didn't want it to end like this. That he didn't want it to end at all.
"Zoey, wait". He closed the steps between them easily enough, with his long legs easily over taking her shorter ones.
"What?" She spun towards him with a look of loathing. One he had never seen on anyone else before, or maybe he had, it just hadn't mattered as much as hers did.
"I'm sorry." He wasn't even entirely sure what he was apologizing for if he were being honest. It just seemed like the right thing to do.
"Don't tell me that, I'm not the one you left hanging." She spat cruelly back at him. Kane backpedaled a step.
"I told him that I wasn't that kind of guy, even before we had sex." He helplessly explained to her, but she was refusing to see reason. "I told him I wasn't the Roses and Poems type. He knew all of that before anything happened." He couldn't help the desperation seeping into his voice, making it c***k. As if he were going through another puberty. He just so desperately wanted her approval and he couldn't even say why that was.
"That doesn't make it okay though." She screamed out, her face becoming beat red as she glanced around nervously, to see if anyone had heard her. "That doesn't change what you did." She amended in a little bit of a softer tone. Kane thought it over and he had to admit she had a point, he had been cold towards him. But how could someone else's misplaced expectations be his responsibility to fulfill?
"I'll apologize to him." Kane found himself saying.
"You would, why would you do that?" Zoey looked slightly taken aback by this new development and Kane couldn't help but smile at that. He had surprised her.
"Because it'll make you happy." Zoey's face fell with disappointment and he winced at his own mistake. It hadn't been the right thing to say.
"Not because you think you did something wrong will you apologize, but because you think it'll make me happy?" She shook her head angrily. Her voice raising a little at the end in her disbelief. "You're unbelievable." She threw her hands up her own frustration.
"Yes, I am." Kane raised a hand so silently that when Zoey noticed, it was far to late. Her features turned down in confusion as he turned the palm towards her.
"What are you.." But Zoey never got the chance to finish her question. Not before shimmering, white hot light sprang from Kane's palm and slammed right into her eyes, throwing her off balance. The world tilted and turned dark around the edges of her field of vision. She could feel her body going limp, as if she were a life sized rag doll.
"Wow there, don't worry I got you." Kane's voice was in her ear and he was holding her upright. As she draped across him. Her head lolling to the side. "You wont remember any of this anyways." Kane snapped his fingers once, the sound so quiet it hardly even echoed back at him. A wall of that same shimmering, white hot light arose beside him. It quickly formed what appeared to be a door. Kane swung Zoey up, into his arms and passed through the doorway. Not bothering to see if anyone had been paying any attention to him.
Had he have glanced up, even for a moment he may have noticed the pair of sky blue eyes peering out at him from the door of the club. The shadows fell across Micah as he stood frozen in his spot, a scream of horror at what he had just witnessed dying on his lips. Without thinking of his own well being, he dove head first into the shimmering door. Just as it closed behind him. He had been right, he had never expected this. But he had been right about the bad feeling about Kane and now? Now He knew why. Perhaps the only thing truthful that Kane had ever said, was what he'd said to Micah that night he'd sought him out. "I'm not a good guy." Yea and after whatever that was he had done to Zoey Micah had every intention of getting Zoey away from him and then finding out what type of bad Kane really was.
