Chapter 5

Selene's POV I barely got any sleep last night. The bed was soft, but my mind was still troubled, and I still couldn't sleep. My silver hair… What did it mean? My mother always said my blonde locks were a gift from the Moon Goddess. But this—this was different. “Why now?” I whispered, running my fingers through my hair again. A knock on the door interrupted my thoughts. “Selene, it’s Lucian,” a voice said from behind the door. I quickly got out of bed and opened to door, when I opened it, Lucian was holding a small tray. “Figured you might be hungry. You barely ate today,” he said, offering me a warm smile. “Thanks,” I replied. "But I'm not so hung...." my stomach made noises, interrupting me Lucian laughed. “Take your time. After you eat, I want to show you something. Something important.” “What is it?” I asked curiously. His expression grew serious. “Answers.” His words made me so scared. I ate my food quickly. As soon as I was done, I went to meet him in the hallway. We walked silently, not saying a word. He led me through the hallway until we reached a hidden staircase. “Where are we going?” I asked, my voice echoing faintly in the stone stairwell. “You’ll see,” he said, descending the steps ahead of me. When we finally were done with the stairs, we entered a circular room, the walls of the place were decorated with ancient things. “Lucian, what is this place?” I whispered. He turned to face me, his expression unreadable. “This is the heart of the Shadow Pack. Our sanctuary and our truth.” Before I could ask him to elaborate, the sound of footsteps echoed behind us. I turned to see Darius and Zephyr approaching, their faces also stern. “You brought her here already?” Darius asked, his tone both curious and reproachful. “She deserves to know,” Lucian replied firmly. Zephyr crossed his arms, his sharp eyes cutting into me. “Are you sure she would be able to handle it" “I’m still here, you know,” I said, my voice filled with annoyance. Zephyr laughed slightly but said nothing. Lucian stepped forward and placed a hand on my shoulder. “Selene, do you know why the elders despise us?” I shook my head. “They think we’re abominations,” Darius said, his voice laced with bitterness. “We defied their laws, broke away from their control, and formed our pack with our own rules.” “We’re not bound by their traditions,” Zephyr added. “We protect those they cast out. But there is more to it than that." Lucian looked towards the ancient things on the wall “These symbols represent an ancient power. A power the elders have tried to bury for centuries. And you, Selene, may be connected to it.” “Me?” I asked, incredulous. Darius nodded. “Your silver hair is a sign. It’s rare—nearly unheard of. It marks those chosen by the Moon Goddess for a higher purpose.” Zephyr snorted. “Or a curse, depending on who you ask.” I stepped back, my heart racing “This doesn’t make any sense. I’m just… me. I’m not chosen or cursed or anything else you’re saying.” Lucian stepped closer, his eyes soft but insistent. “Selene, think back. Has anything strange happened to you recently? Dreams, visions, feelings you couldn’t explain?” I froze. The dream. The shadowy figure, the haunting voice calling my name. “There was… a dream,” I admitted hesitantly. “A voice called out to me. It felt real like it was pulling me somewhere.” The three men exchanged glances, their expressions darkening. “What did the voice say?” Lucian asked. I hesitated, the memory still vivid. “It said… ‘Find the light in the shadow.’” The cavern grew eerily silent. Even Zephyr looked unsettled. “That is not good,” Darius said, rubbing the back of his neck. “What does it mean?” I asked. “It means the Moon Goddess is calling you,” Lucian said. “And if that’s true, the elders will stop at nothing to find you My heart dropped “Why? What do they want with me?” Zephyr’s voice was cold as he answered. “To silence you. To keep the truth hidden.” Before I could respond, the ground beneath us started shaking. “What is happening?” I yelled, holding Lucian's arm for support. Darius drew his sword, his eyes scanning the room. “We’re under attack.” “By who?” I asked, panic creeping into my voice. “The elders,” Zephyr growled, his eyes glowing faintly. “They’ve found us.” Lucian grabbed my hand, his grip firm. “Selene, you need to get out of here. Now.” “No! I’m not leaving!” I protested. “You don’t have a choice!” he shouted, his usual calm tone replaced by urgency. “Darius and Zephyr will hold them off. I’ll take you somewhere safe.” The ground shook again. “We’re out of time,” Lucian said, pulling me towards the staircase. I glanced back at Darius and Zephyr. Darius gave me a reassuring nod, his sword gleaming in the faint light. “Go, Selene,” he said. “We’ll hold them off. Don’t let them catch you.” Zephyr didn’t say anything, but he looked like he was ready. Lucian and I went up the stairs. My heart pounded in my chest the moonlight putting a glow over the forest. “Where are we going?” I asked almost out of breath “To someone who can protect you,” Lucian replied, his eyes scanning the treeline. Suddenly, a figure appeared in front of us, blocking our path. “Well, well, what do we have here?” he laughed callously “Victor,” Lucian said, his grip on my hand tightened “Lucian, you’ve been hiding something interesting,” Victor said, his gaze shifting to me. “The elders will reward me handsomely for bringing her to them.” “You’ll have to go through me first,” Lucian growled, stepping protectively in front of me. Victor laughed, the sound chilling. “Gladly.” Before I could react, Victor lunged at Lucian, his claws glinting in the moonlight. “Run, Selene!” Lucian yelled, blocking Victor’s attack. I paused. “Go!” he shouted. I immediately ran into the forest. But as I ran, I then realized I had no idea where I was going. And worse, the forest was extremely silent. But I heard footsteps as they followed me I turned around, my heart racing, only to see a figure, his eyes red and a very callous smile.
