Selene's POV The night was alive with danger. A heavy stillness settled over the forest, broken only by the distant rustle of leaves and the whisper of the wind. My heart pounded in my chest, a frantic rhythm that echoed the warning screaming in my mind. Something was wrong. I was never supposed to be out here alone. But fate had a cruel way of forcing my hand. A cold shiver ran down my spine as I stepped into the clearing. I could feel eyes on me, lurking in the shadows beyond the tree line. The sensation prickled against my skin, an instinctual warning that sent my muscles coiling with tension. And then, he stepped forward. Victor. His presence was like a dark cloud rolling in, suffocating and inescapable. His sharp, angular features were partially illuminated by the moonlight, and his dark eyes glinted with something predatory. "You should have stayed hidden, Selene," he said, his voice smooth, laced with malice. "Wandering out here alone? A dangerous choice." I held my ground, refusing to show the fear clawing at my insides. "I don’t belong to anyone. Least of all, you." Victor smirked, shaking his head. "Still so defiant. It’s a shame, really. I was hoping you’d be smarter than this." I forced myself to remain still, my breath steady despite the rising panic curling in my stomach. My mind raced, scanning for possible escape routes. The trees were dense, but if I could get past him, I had a chance. "You’re wasting your time," I said, my voice firm. "Lucian will come for me." Victor’s smirk widened. "Oh, I’m counting on it." And then, he moved. He lunged with inhuman speed. I barely had time to react before his fingers closed around my wrist, yanking me forward with bone-crushing strength. My instincts kicked in—I twisted, bringing my elbow up in a sharp strike aimed at his jaw. He dodged at the last second, his grip tightening like a vice. "Not bad," he mused. "But not good enough." I gritted my teeth, refusing to surrender. Using the momentum, I kicked out, my foot connecting with his ribs. The impact sent a sharp jolt up my leg, but Victor barely flinched. Instead, he laughed. "Oh, Selene. You have fire, I’ll give you that." I fought harder. I twisted, clawed, kicked—anything to break free. But Victor was stronger, faster. Every movement I made, he countered effortlessly. Then, with a sudden shift, he swept my legs out from under me. I hit the ground hard, the impact rattling through my bones. Before I could scramble up, he was on me, pinning me down with one arm pressing against my throat. "You could make this easier on yourself," Victor murmured, his face inches from mine. "Or we can do it the hard way." I glared up at him, my breath coming in ragged gasps. "Go to hell." Victor sighed. "Hard way, then." Lucian’s Arrival A growl rumbled through the air, deep and menacing. Victor’s body tensed. I turned my head just in time to see him—Lucian. He stood at the edge of the clearing, his golden eyes burning with barely contained fury. His presence was like a storm rolling in, powerful and undeniable. Victor smirked but didn’t move. "Ah, the Alpha himself." Lucian’s jaw clenched. "Let her go. Now." Victor tilted his head, as if considering it. Then he shook his head. "I don’t think I will." Lucian didn't wait for another word. He lunged, a blur of motion too fast to track. Victor barely had time to react before they collided, the force of their impact shaking the ground beneath them. I rolled away, gasping for breath, my vision swimming. Lucian fought with raw, unrelenting fury. His movements were precise, deadly. Every strike was aimed to kill. But Victor wasn’t weak. He countered every attack with ruthless efficiency, a cruel smile playing on his lips. Then, from the shadows—movement. I sucked in a breath as figures emerged from the trees, their glowing eyes piercing the darkness. More rogues. Lucian was strong, but he couldn’t fight them all. His gaze locked onto mine. "Run, Selene!" My heart clenched. "Lucian—" "I said run!" His voice was a command, leaving no room for argument. I turned and ran. The forest swallowed me whole, its darkness pressing in from all sides. My feet pounded against the earth, my breath coming in sharp gasps. Every step was a battle against the terror clawing at my throat. Branches tore at my arms, the rough bark scraping against my skin. I barely felt the pain. All that mattered was getting away. But they were fast. I could hear them—heavy footsteps, the rustling of leaves, the occasional low growl. They were closing in. Then, up ahead, the trees thinned, revealing a steep drop. My heart leapt into my throat as I saw what lay below—a river, its dark waters rushing violently against the jagged rocks. It was my only chance. I sprinted forward, gathering every ounce of strength left in my body. And then— Pain exploded through my skull. Something hard struck the back of my head, and the world tilted beneath me. My vision blurred, darkness creeping in at the edges. I barely felt the rough hands that grabbed me. Barely heard the distant sound of Lucian’s furious roar. The last thing I saw before the darkness swallowed me whole was the golden glow of his eyes, filled with unrelenting fury. And then, nothing.
