CHAPTER SEVENTEEN: The Orange Section

I want to tell you that I arrived at the annex building at six AM looking like a person who had slept. I did not sleep. I want to be transparent about this. What I did instead was lie in bed from eleven PM to four AM performing an incredibly detailed internal documentary about every significant event of the previous forty-eight hours, narrated by the Radio in the tone of a nature programme about a woman who had made several significant decisions and was now assessing their downstream consequences in real time. At four AM I gave up, made coffee, reviewed both hard drives on my laptop, made fourteen pages of notes, colour-coded them — blue for confirmed, red for urgent, green for connections, and a new category, orange, for things that are true that I have not yet decided what to do with
