Chapter 4 Enemies Meet on a Narrow Road

1092 Words
"Who are you? What are you doing here, lurking around?" A deep, suspicious voice echoed through the air. Sally knew that if she didn’t clarify things quickly, misunderstandings were inevitable! With that thought, Sally lifted her gaze. "I’m the new..." Her words trailed off as she froze, completely stunned by the person standing before her. Her mind went blank, like a computer crashing unexpectedly! How could it be him? Luke! He’s the president of GlamourWave group? Could this really be happening? In that moment, a whirlwind of thoughts raced through Sally's mind, the first being that she should turn around and leave immediately. Yet, her feet seemed glued to the ground, refusing to budge. The Luke of today was a picture of maturity and poise, his features sharper and more defined, yet his charisma was as magnetic as ever, impossible to ignore. Astonishment and disbelief filled her eyes as she took him in. Luke's gaze lingered on the woman before him, taking in her delicate features. Her fair, V-shaped face was delicate and beautiful, with soft pink lips and a small, elegant nose. But it was her eyes, clear as spring water, that were truly mesmerizing. He had to admit, the woman before him was a genuine beauty. While the world was not short of beautiful women, it was rare to find someone who exuded such a refreshing aura, someone who was simply pleasant to look at. But... The way she looked at him... it was a bit strange. Could it be that she knew him? Yet, in his memory, he didn’t recall knowing anyone like her. If he had, he would certainly remember. "You still haven’t answered my question!" Luke’s voice cut through the air sharply. His words snapped Sally back to reality. She blinked, "Well, I’m..." "Were you listening in on us?" Erin emerged from inside, staring directly at Sally as she asked. It seemed like beautiful women often found themselves at odds. From the moment Erin laid eyes on Sally, dislike radiated from her like a palpable aura. After all, she believed Sally had disrupted their moment! Sally's brows furrowed in confusion and irritation as her gaze shifted to Erin, who was looking at her with hostility. "I'm the new designer, Sally. I'm here to report to the CEO!" Sally declared, her voice steady and composed, leaving no room for doubt. "Sally...?" Luke's voice drawled, his long eyes narrowing as they focused intently on her. Hearing Luke utter her name sent a shiver down Sally's spine, her heart pounding with anxiety, fearing he might remember. She stood there, palms sweating. Talk about a small world, she thought. Who would have thought the CEO of GlamourWave would be him! Had she known, she would have never taken this job! "Follow me," Luke instructed. "Luke..." Erin protested, casting a displeased glance at him. "Erin, head back first. I have work to finish. I'll find you afterward," Luke replied with certainty. Erin knew well that Luke was a workaholic, always serious about his job. Having been by his side for so long, she understood this about him. Still... She shot Sally a warning look, then said, "I'll wait for your call tonight!" "Okay!" With that, Erin spun on her heel and left, leaving Sally standing there, trying to remain composed. But now, with Erin gone, it was just the two of them. * After Erin left, Sally stood there, trying her best to appear calm. Meanwhile, Luke lounged in his sleek swivel chair, his black shirt unbuttoned just enough to reveal a hint of his tanned skin, adding to his mysterious allure. Who would have thought they'd cross paths like this after two years? Luke glanced at the personnel file in front of him, his long fingers casually flipping through it, not really reading, just noting the photo and name. "Sally? Back from London?" Luke's voice echoed as his gaze locked onto her. "Yes!" Sally replied, a confident smile danced on her lips, though it was all an act. Inside, she was a whirlwind of emotions. She regretted not thoroughly researching GlamourWave's background before joining. Who could have imagined that Mr. Makenzie was the president of GlamourWave! Watching Ms. Grace's confident demeanor, Mr. Makenzie's eyes narrowed slightly. "Your resume is quite impressive!" At this, Ms. Grace furrowed her brow. What did he mean by that? What was so impressive about her resume? She looked at Mr. Makenzie, with a touch of warmth in her voice, "Ability is more important!" Hearing her response, Mr. Makenzie raised an eyebrow, a glimmer of interest flashing in his eyes. Interesting. "Then Ms. Grace must have quite the abilities!" "If I didn't, GlamourWave wouldn't have hired me," Ms. Grace replied, realizing that in two years, Mr. Makenzie had become even more enigmatic. He had become a master at keeping his emotions under wraps. Mr. Makenzie studied her, encountering for the first time a woman who neither fawned over nor flattered him, yet maintained her dignity and had her own ideas. "Sure, ability matters, but character is even more crucial," Mr. Makenzie remarked, meeting Ms. Grace's gaze. Ms. Grace frowned, sensing that Mr. Makenzie was deliberately targeting her. "Mr. Makenzie, I'm not quite sure what you're getting at! Or do you think I was eavesdropping on purpose at the door?" Ms. Grace asked, looking at Mr. Makenzie. Mr. Makenzie didn't respond immediately, instead, his eyes narrowed with a glint of sharpness as he leaned back lazily. Yet, the answer was as clear as day. Ms. Grace smiled slightly, "Mr. Makenzie, let me explain again, I didn't mean to eavesdrop. I was here to report in and overheard by accident!" "You should have knocked," Mr. Makenzie said, looking at her, convinced she had done it on purpose. "I had my reasons for not knocking. These days, knocking might just ruffle the boss's feathers, not knocking and leaving isn't a big deal, but as I hesitated, the door opened. Mr. Makenzie, where do you think I went wrong?" Ms. Grace asked him. In two years, his flirtatious nature hadn't changed, and he had become even better at making things difficult for people! Listening to her, Mr. Makenzie couldn't shake the feeling that Ms. Grace was subtly criticizing him. "Don't compare me to those people!" Mr. Makenzie said. "I'm not comparing, but if Mr. Makenzie is afraid of comparisons, maybe you should dial it back a notch!" "Are you trying to lecture me now!?" Mr. Makenzie frowned, speaking with displeasure. "I wouldn't dare presume, I'm just telling it like it is!"
