Chapter 5 Déjà Vu

943 Words
Scared? Luke's lips curled into a teasing, mischievous smile. The woman before him exuded a fiery confidence; he couldn't see what she would be scared of. But this only piqued his interest even more. As Sally watched that knowing smile play on Luke's lips, a shiver ran down her spine, her heart skipping a beat. Was she being too forward? But with Luke standing there, she just couldn't help herself! Sally reined in her emotions, looking at Luke. "If there's nothing else, I'll get back to work!" she said, turning to leave without waiting for his response. "Wait!" Luke's magnetic voice echoed behind her. Instantly, Sally's steps came to a halt. She felt a pang of regret—why stop? She should just keep walking. Yet, for some reason, her feet refused to move. At that moment, Luke rose from his chair, his commanding presence moving slowly toward her. Sally stood there, outwardly calm, but inside, her mind was a whirlwind. She had imagined their reunion a thousand times, a million times, but never like this. And his demeanor seemed as if he didn't recognize her? While Sally's mind was a whirl of thoughts, Luke had already reached her, his towering height casting a shadow over her, leaving her breathless. Luke gazed at her, his long eyes narrowing slightly as he leaned in closer. The sudden closeness startled Sally, making her step back, but she couldn't retreat fast enough. She found herself pressed against the wall, and Luke followed suit, his hand resting on the wall, encircling her completely. Their posture, their stance, was undeniably suggestive. "Wh-what are you doing?" Sally stammered, trying to maintain her composure, but facing Luke like this, she couldn't help but feel a bit nervous. Two years apart, and he was still the same! As devilishly charming and as incorrigibly flirtatious as ever! Seeing the woman before him stammer, Luke's smile grew satisfied. "What do you think I'm up to?" Sally stayed silent. Luke was incredibly clever; talking to him was like navigating a minefield. Wisely, Sally kept her silence, meeting his gaze. "Mr. Makenzie, standing this close, people might get the wrong idea!" A sharp woman, indeed. She knew just how to defuse her own awkwardness. Luke ignored her words and instead lowered his gaze, studying her fair, delicate face. There was something undeniably familiar about it. "Sally..." Luke murmured, furrowing his brow as he called her name, his eyes fixed on her face, as if trying to recall something. Sally watched him, her heart pounding furiously, terrified he might recognize her! But what he said next caught her completely off guard. "Why do you seem so familiar? Have we met before?" His words left Sally momentarily speechless, unsure of how to respond. Yet, seeing Luke's expression, as if he was on the verge of remembering, made Sally feel like her heart was about to leap out of her chest! "Mr. Makenzie, you must be kidding. I just returned from London; how could I possibly know you?" Sally replied with a calm smile. Not giving him a chance to speak again, Sally continued, "Mr. Makenzie, if there's nothing else, I'll be going. I have work to do!" With that, she made a beeline for the door. Once she reached the doorway, her composure shattered, and she dashed away. Meanwhile, Luke remained, one hand still against the wall, watching Sally's retreat with an amused smile. Now, this was a woman worth watching! Interesting indeed... As for Sally, she ran from the CEO's office until she reached a quiet corner where she finally dared to stop. Standing there, she took a deep breath, placing a hand over her heart, which was still racing wildly. Recalling Luke's words, she couldn't calm her mind. Could he really not remember? Or was he pretending? Sally didn't know, her heart in knots. She hadn't expected to run into him on her second day back, and to end up in his company, no less! At that moment, Bella's words echoed in her mind: If Luke finds out you deceived him, what do you think he'll do? "She said I'd probably meet a terrible fate!" At the time, I didn't sense the danger, but now, it's definitely creeping in! How did I get so unlucky, ugh! But thinking about Luke's calm demeanor, maybe he genuinely didn't recognize me. Otherwise, he wouldn't have been so composed, just teasing me a bit. Given his temperament, he'd surely find a way to make my life a nightmare! After some thought, whether Luke truly didn't recognize me or is just playing along, I can't stick around. If he finds out, I'm in for a world of trouble. Given how I stood up to him today, he might just fire me! It's better if I resign before he gets the chance to fire me! With that decision, Sally resolved to head back and draft her resignation letter. Is there anything more tragic than quitting a job on your first day? But to dodge future complications, she had to leave. Resolute, Sally took a deep breath and headed back to the design department. Just then, Sally's phone buzzed. Seeing Bella's name flash on the screen, she answered without a second thought. "Hey there!" "Hey, darling, how's the new job treating you?" Bella asked on the other end. "Take a wild guess!" "It must be fantastic!" Bella guessed. Sally sighed deeply and said, "Bella, guess who my boss is?" "Who?!" "It's Luke!" Sally whispered, lowering her voice as if someone might overhear. She really didn't want anyone to know about her history with Luke. It was a secret she intended to keep!
