Paul was pained by Elizabeth’s dirty slaps, however he didn't resist her nor retaliated. After all, this wasn't the first time of Elizabeth’s relentless assaults on his person. He had been exposed to such ruthless humiliation and attacks from her ever since he knew her and was already used to her ruthlessness and mockery. Instead of retaliating, Paul shouldered the pains of the slaps, eschewed his anger and avoided another slap from her by withdrawing himself from Elizabeth’s face.
He turned to Ella and asked again, “Darling, what are you doing with him and why is he here with you?”
He also turned to Bryan and asked, “What are you doing with my wife?”
“Ahem! Your Wife?!” Bryan opened his mouth and laughed sardonically at Paul, and then said, “Did I hear you say that Miss Orlan is your wife? A wife that you have never kissed not to talk of sleeping with her together?! That's very ridiculous! I never knew that you're equally impotent until I confirmed it myself by having Ella on my bed. Now, tell me, how can a useless, good-for-nothing and impotent nincompoop like you be with a beautiful and attractive young lady like Miss Orlan?”
Paul's anger was brazenly burning with an inestimable pain as he listened to Bryan's words of mockery and humiliation.
He lifted his hands to slap him but, unfortunately, a strong force blocked him almost immediately. The force pushed him back and began to hit him ruthlessly.
These forces were from the bodyguards who came with Bryan.
“Stop!”
Ella, who was standing close to them, shouted and immediately Bryan's bodyguards quickly withdrew their fists on Paul. Although Paul was pained by the ruthless attacks of Bryan's bodyguards on him, he didn't dare to retaliate. Instead, he only struggled to break free from their mindless assaults.
However, he had the urge to retaliate and beat them up as his strength could exterminate them should he go on a duel against them, but after his mind constantly reminded him of the price of his freedom from the underground prison dungeon and the threat of the person in charge of the prison, he eschewed his fighting urges.
“Paul, why have you decided to become very troublesome in your life? Why are you attacking my innocent visitor right in front of me and at my father's compound?” Ella began to bombard Paul with questions after she stopped Bryan's bodyguards from beating him.
With disappointment and an angry voice, Ella continued to lash out at Paul, saying, “I was hoping that your experience of prison would change your life for good, but little did I know that you had even turned into a wolf. I am very disappointed in you and I can't continue to condole your uselessness!”
“Darling, what are you saying? How could you say that I'm troublesome…”
“Stop that nonsense right there! Who is your darling?!” Ella was enraged.
She could not even allow Paul to complete his statement. “Haven't you done enough damage to me and my family? How much more shame do you want to bring up on us before you stop causing problems for us, you ungrateful bastard, useless and good-for-nothing rascal?! Oh, is this how you planned to repay me for taking good care of you for over eight years?!”
Eight years ago, Mr Browson Orlan, who was Ella's father and founder of Orlan’s group, brought Paul home and married him into his family with his favorite, beautiful and only daughter. Although other family members kicked against Brownson’s decision to marry Ella to Paul, Ella didn't fault her father's decision because she believed that her father would never harm her, as he loved and cherished her so much that he even promised to give her the whole world.
Back then, Paul was equally the most intelligent and smart medical student at Fly-top University. As an intelligent student, Paul was the person doing Ella's assignment as well as teaching her because Ella's IQ was far below his.
Unfortunately, he was homeless after being disowned and kicked out of his late parents' empire by his heartless uncle who forcibly took all the vast empire left behind by his parents.
His Uncle, whose name was Mr James Chile, had alleged that all of Chile's vast empire was his and that Paul's parents were only his subordinates and family members. Because he was the managing director of the Chile's Groups before Paul's parents died from a fatal accident, Mr James Chile secretly changed all the names on the official documents of the Chile's Groups to bear his. He further accused Paul of mismanagement and squandering his money. This, he disowned him and threw him out of Chile's mansion, rendering him homeless.
Meanwhile, Browson Orlan took him in and married him to his only daughter as a fulfillment of the promise which he made to Paul's late father, who was his best friend, college-mate and business partner.
As friends, both Mr Orlan and Paul's late father agreed that they would strengthen their friendship through the inter-marriage of their children.
However, Browson Orlan died a year after he married Paul into his family with his daughter as a live-in son-in-law.
Since then, Paul has become acquainted with sufferings, mockery, humiliation, and rejections from both his fellow students and Ella's family members after he started living with them.
Paul's position in Orlan's family was reduced to a go-in-between dog for the members of Orlan's family. Apart from washing dirty plates, making dishes for the family, washing both Ella's dirty undies and clothes and those of Ella's mother, Elizabeth, and Bennett’s own inclusive, he was also being ridiculed and insulted by them.
Elizabeth and Benneth mounted extreme pressure on Ella to divorce Paul, but Ella usually paid deaf ears to their pressure.
Both Ella and Paul were medical students at Fly Top University and Paul was helping Ella out with her assignments and other menial jobs. Ella lacked the ability to grasp what was being taught in classrooms, which was why she refused to heed her parents' advice, as Paul was the one helping her out academically. Also, she wanted to honor her deceased father's dying wishes, who advised her to marry Paul back then.
Meanwhile, Paul's importance has been exhausted after he got suspended from the college by the university’s senate for breaking the university’s rules by fighting and slapping Bryan Knot, who was an heir to a powerful conglomerate and subsequently got imprisoned three years ago. He had outlived his importance and there was no need for Ella to keep him by her side.
With a displeased but yet determined expression on her face, Ella said to Paul, “To tell you the truth, Paul, I am tired of you and this disease called marriage. You could see that I was very happy just now and that was because I had forgotten about you long ago. I even thought that you had died in prison and had already started making plans for my remarriage to Mr Knot here. However, you came back from nowhere very disgustingly in order to ruin my happiness, but that's not going to work for you.
“I would have allowed Mr Knot’s bodyguards to deal with you for trying to meddle in an affair that does not concern you, but after considering the fact that you just came back from prison, I decided to save you from them because of my generosity and for the fact that I still need you to sign our divorce papers.
“Meanwhile, I have also decided to help your wretched and miserable self for the very last time. I will give you one hundred thousand dollars and divorce you. You can use the money to help yourself. After all, you have never seen such an amount of money in your life and would certainly not see it in all your lifetime.”
Paul's eyes widened in surprise. Displeasure and helplessness wittingly hovered on his face and gravely etched his heavily wounded heart after hearing Ella’s heartless words.
