"I have him!"
The scream tore from Benedict's throat as he threw his body over the edge of the pit, his fingers catching the top bar of the silver cage just as the metal chain snapped completely.
The terrifying sound of grinding metal echoed through the underground shaft as Benedict's arm jerked violently, taking the full, brutal weight of the falling iron. He dug his boots into the crumbling rock ledge, his muscles straining so hard that dark veins bulged against his skin. Below him, the dark abyss stretched down into absolute nothingness, the freezing air rushing up from the black water far below.
"Benedict!" I shrieked, sprinting toward the edge as dust and small stones rained down around us.
