Esther drew her legs up under the covers so Gina could sit
on the end of the bed. That left the only chair available
for Joy.
“Joy, why don’t you start by telling us a little about your family.”
“I am the elder of two sisters. I was ambitious and determined to enter medical school so I became my parent’s hope for the future.” Joy paused to look at them. “But history was about to destroy my plans.”
“Do you mean Chairman Mao?” Esther wrinkled her nose.
“Yes. Most judge him harshly now, but back then we viewed
Mao Zedong as a hero worthy of worship because he was making our nation great.” Joy spread her arms wide. “I dreamed of being a medical specialist in a glorious country. It was not to be. Mao launched what you know as the Cultural Revolution.”
