32 Esther arrived at work the next day bleary-eyed from lack of sleep. She’d have taken a mental health day if she hadn’t already taken so much time off work. Her emotions were all over the place. Regret and disappointment. Relief, that she didn’t have to struggle to keep the relationship limping along. Anger, at herself for not being more proactive in seeking counselling with Nick. And dread, at the thought of breaking the news to her parents. Maybe she should have already told her parents, but they’d barely seen each other. Besides, she wasn’t tackling that conversation without plenty of prayer first. She opened her locker, put her handbag and cardigan in, closed it, and clicked the lock. Her jaw and neck ached with strain. Esther stretched into a fake yawn and rolled her shoulders.
