16 Esther dialled the phone number. It was picked up on the fifth ring. “Is that Liz? This is Esther.” They spoke for a minute before Esther could get down to business. This week was the worst of her life so far. Two hours ago, she’d had a tear-filled conversation with Nick about postponing the wedding. The subsequent conversation with her parents hadn’t been any easier. Her mother took pity on her and said she’d ring the caterer and the florist, but Esther had to ring the bridesmaids. Liz was the first call. The call she thought would be the easiest. “Thank you for your concerns about my health but that’s not what I’m ringing you about.
