Kelly’s POV
“If I’m a sin,” Pixy had whispered last night, “then you’re the one praying at my altar. Don’t forget who started this, Alpha-to-be.” Those words stayed in my head long after she left. I didn’t know why. Usually, girls’ words meant nothing to me. They came and went like the wind outside the mountains. But Pixy’s voice had weight. Still, I refused to think about it.
Morning arrived before I could even get real sleep. A loud knock struck my door.
Then another. And another.
“Kelly!”
I groaned and dragged the blanket over my head.
“Go away,” I muttered.
The door opened anyway. Of course it did.
Only one person in the entire kingdom had the courage to ignore my mood this early in the morning. Louis. Future Gamma of our Kingdom. My closest friend. And sometimes my worst enemy when it comes to sleep.
“The flying hell, Lou,” I groaned. “Give me some breathing space. I haven’t even woken up properly and you’re already standing there like a guard dog.”
Louis stood near the door with his arms crossed. His face, as usual, looked calm and unreadable.
“It’s not a morning for laziness,” he said. “We need to leave immediately. The Alpha demands your presence in the kingdom hall.”
I buried my face deeper into the pillow.
Of course. My father. Who else would ruin a perfectly good morning? “What does he want now?” I muttered.
Louis shrugged slightly. “He didn’t say.”
That meant one thing. Training. Fighting. More responsibilities. More expectations. My mind already felt heavy just thinking about it.
Train harder, Kelly. Fight stronger, Kelly. Lead better, Kelly.Prove yourself worthy. Sometimes I wondered if anyone in this kingdom remembered that I was only sixteen. I sat up slowly and rubbed my eyes.
“Even if the Alpha wants me immediately,” I said, “I still need to shower. I’m not walking into the hall looking like a wild wolf.”
Louis nodded. “Take your time. I’ll wait.”
He turned toward the door. “Wait,” I called after him. He stopped. “How is Florence?” I asked casually. “Tell her to heat the meat from last night and bring it here.” Louis didn’t respond. I smirked slightly. “And tell her to dress properly too.” That finally made him glance back at me with a look that clearly said he disapproved.
Louis rarely judged me out loud. But his silence always did the job. When he left the room, the silence returned.Louis and I had known each other since childhood. Our families were connected long before we were born. His mother had been close to mine. Both women were legends in their own way.And both were gone now. My mother died giving birth to me. Louis’s mother disappeared not long after.
No one ever spoke about it. But I knew it had changed him. Louis used to laugh when we were younger. Now he barely smiled. I stood up and walked into the bathroom. Cold water poured over my head. For a moment, I just stood there breathing slowly. But the quiet didn’t help. Because my mind betrayed me again.
Pixy. Her voice. Her touch. The way she looked at me last night. My wolf stirred inside my chest. Restless. Hungry. I clenched my jaw and leaned my head against the wall.
“Damn it,” I muttered. Why was she still in my thoughts? That girl had a talent for getting under my skin. I shut my eyes tightly and tried to clear my mind. But the more I tried to ignore her, the stronger the memory became. Her laughter. Her defiance. Her bold words.
“You’re a dangerous habit,” she had said. Maybe she was right. Because even when she wasn’t here, she still found ways to haunt me.
I exhaled slowly and forced myself to focus. This was weakness. And weakness was dangerous for an Alpha’s son. When I finally left the bathroom, Louis was already back inside the room. He stood beside the table with a plate of food in his hands.
Florence followed behind him. She smiled brightly the moment she saw me. “Here is your breakfast,” she said cheerfully. “I heated the meat and added some spices. I know how you like it.”
Before I could respond, she stepped closer and tried to touch my arm. I moved away immediately. “Florence,” I said flatly. “Don’t put your hands on me.”
Her smile faded. “I only brought your food.”
“Yes,” I replied calmly. “And that’s enough.”
Her expression hardened slightly. Florence was talented in the kitchen. No one could deny that.
But she also had a habit of pushing boundaries. A habit I didn’t like. “How many times have I warned you?” I continued. “Don’t force closeness where it isn’t welcome.” For a moment she looked like she might argue.
But then she simply placed the plate on the table.
“Enjoy your meal,” she said in a loud tone.
Then she stormed out of the room. The door slammed behind her. I stared at the door for a moment. “Since when does Florence raise her voice at me?” I muttered. Louis ignored the comment. Instead, he looked at the food. “You should eat,” he said. “Join me,” I replied, pushing the plate toward him. Louis hesitated.
He loved food. That was one of the few things about him that hadn’t changed since childhood.
But duty always came first for him. “Quickly,” he said. “The Alpha is waiting.” We ate in silence.
The meat was good. Florence truly did know how to cook. But even that couldn’t calm the tension building inside me. Because every second that passed brought me closer to facing my father. Victor Rayes. The Alpha who ruled the our Kingdom. A man feared by thousands.
And the one of the man in the world who could still make my hands shake. Louis noticed. He always noticed.
“You’re nervous,” he said quietly.
I scoffed. “Me? Nervous?”
But the truth sat heavy in my chest. Because when my father summoned me like this… It was never for something simple. And somehow, deep down, I already knew. Today was going to change something. I just didn’t know what yet.
