Episode 11 ā The Crack in the Iceš
By Rhemita Stories
The car ride home was silent, yet the air inside felt too thick to breathe. Elena sat by the window, watching the city lights blur into streaks of gold and red. Her reflection in the glass looked foreign ā a girl trapped in a world she didnāt belong to.
Adrian sat beside her, one hand resting on the armrest, his expression cold as ever. Yet beneath that calm surface, something churned inside him. The way sheād stood up for herself at the business event⦠the fire in her voice⦠it lingered in his mind like an unwelcome melody.
When the car pulled up to the mansion, Adrian was the first to step out. He didnāt wait for her, didnāt even look back. Typical Adrian Knight ā always in control.
Elena followed quietly, her heels clicking against the marble floor as the heavy front doors closed behind her. The house felt emptier than usual tonight. Even the faint hum of the chandelier seemed to mock the silence between them.
āGo to bed,ā Adrianās voice came from behind her ā deep, smooth, commanding.
She turned, her hands clenched at her sides. āI wasnāt aware I needed your permission for that.ā
His lips curved, not into a smile but something close to it ā amusement laced with danger. āYou donāt. But you look tired, Mrs. Knight. Iād hate for the press to think Iām working you too hard already.ā
The mockery in his tone stung. āYou enjoy humiliating me, donāt you?ā
He walked closer, his gaze locked on hers. āYouāre mistaken, Elena. I donāt enjoy anything.ā
Her heart thudded painfully. āThatās sad,ā she whispered before she could stop herself.
For a moment, his eyes softened ā just a fraction ā then the wall returned, cold and unyielding. āSadness is a luxury,ā he said quietly, brushing past her.
She turned to watch him disappear up the grand staircase. But for the first time, she didnāt just feel hatred for him. She felt⦠something else. Something she couldnāt name.
---
Hours later, Elena couldnāt sleep. The words heād said echoed in her head ā sadness is a luxury. What had he meant by that?
She slipped out of bed and wandered toward the balcony. The night air was cool, the moonlight silvering her skin.
āWhy canāt I hate you completely?ā she murmured to herself.
Behind her, footsteps approached ā slow, deliberate.
She froze. āYou shouldnāt be awake,ā Adrianās voice came from the shadows.
She turned sharply. He stood in the doorway, shirt unbuttoned halfway, hair slightly messy ā a side of him sheād never seen before. Vulnerable, yet dangerously magnetic.
āI couldnāt sleep,ā she said softly.
He studied her for a long moment. āYou think too much.ā
āAnd you feel too little,ā she shot back.
That did it. In two strides, he was in front of her, his hand gripping the balcony railing beside her head. āYou think you can read me?ā His voice dropped, husky, dangerous. āYou have no idea what Iāve felt, Elena.ā
Her breath caught. āThen show me.ā
The silence that followed was deafening. His jaw clenched. His hand brushed against her cheek ā not gently, but as if testing his own restraint.
āI could destroy you,ā he whispered.
āThen why havenāt you?ā she whispered back.
His eyes darkened, his breath hot against her skin. āBecause you confuse me.ā
Her heart pounded so hard she thought he could hear it. For one dizzying second, she thought he might kiss her ā but instead, he stepped back, turning away.
āGo inside,ā he said, voice rough. āBefore I forget who I am.ā
She stared at his back ā broad, unyielding, yet trembling ever so slightly. Then she whispered, āMaybe forgetting wouldnāt be so bad.ā
He froze, but didnāt turn around. She went inside, her heart in chaos, leaving him under the moonlight ā the ruthless billionaire who suddenly didnāt feel so untouchable anymore.
---
Morning came quietly. Adrian didnāt join her for breakfast. Roan did ā as usual, flashing that easy, playful smile.
āYou look like someone who had a long night,ā he teased, pouring himself coffee.
Elena glared at him. āMaybe because someoneās boss is impossible.ā
Roan chuckled. āThatās old news. But⦠heās changing, you know?ā
She blinked. āChanging?ā
āYeah. He didnāt yell at the driver this morning. Thatās progress.ā
She rolled her eyes but couldnāt hide the small smile tugging her lips. āMaybe heās just tired.ā
āOr maybe heās thinking about you,ā Roan said quietly, almost too gently.
Her smile vanished. āDonāt start.ā
He raised his hands in mock surrender. āJust saying. The great Adrian Knight doesnāt look at people the way he looks at you.ā
Elenaās chest tightened. āHe doesnāt look at me at all.ā
Roanās smirk softened. āIf that helps you sleep at night, Mrs. Knight, keep believing it.ā

Later that evening, Adrian returned early from work ā a rare thing. Elena was in the library, curled up with a book, when he appeared at the doorway.
āI didnāt know you read business journals,ā he said, voice calm but curious.
She looked up, startled. āItās not for you. I was⦠just curious.ā
He stepped closer, his eyes scanning the open page. āMergers and acquisitions? Thatās not exactly bedtime reading.ā
āMaybe I want to understand your world,ā she said quietly.
He froze. That hit deeper than she knew.
For a long time, he said nothing ā just stood there, watching her, his expression unreadable. Then, without another word, he turned and left.
But Elena saw it ā the hesitation, the flicker of emotion that wasnāt there before.
---
That night, as he lay in his bed staring at the ceiling, Adrian couldnāt stop thinking about her words. Maybe I want to understand your world.
No one had ever said that to him before. No one had ever wanted to.
He clenched his jaw, frustrated by the warmth spreading in his chest. āDamn her,ā he muttered. āDamn that woman for getting under my skin.ā
And somewhere across the hall, Elena whispered into the darkness, āWhy canāt I stop thinking about him?ā
Neither knew it yet ā but the ice was beginning to crack.
