Chapter 16

801 Words
Wendy Lincoln suddenly regained her composure. “If that’s the case… then I absolutely cannot call him now.” She glanced at the time on her phone. “My son is currently in evening study.” “I cannot disturb his learning.” “Officer, how about I wait until he comes home tonight and ask him directly, then report back to you?” “My son is an excellent student.” “If the school finds out he behaved abnormally right before the exam, his reputation could be ruined.” “Officer… Mr. Bank Manager… please forgive me.” “I should have asked him first.” “You may punish me if necessary—but please don’t record any mistake under my son’s name.” Tears streamed down her face again. Seeing her condition—middle-aged, barely educated, raising a child alone, and facing the pressure of a major exam—the police officer finally softened. “Alright.” “Don’t be too anxious.” “Go home and clarify the situation first.” “Contact me by ten o’clock tomorrow at the latest.” “If this is not the case, you must still cooperate with our investigation.” “Fighting crime is the duty of every citizen.” Wendy nodded repeatedly. She quickly escorted the police away. Then she climbed onto Mr. Nolan’s motorcycle, and they headed home together. Along the way, both Wendy Lincoln and Mr. Nolan were thinking the same thing. The strange behavior of Anna and Jason today— it must be due to the pressure of the upcoming college entrance exam. Neither of them realized… that the real reason lay somewhere far deeper— and far more dangerous. --- Anna Nolan returned to the classroom carrying the documents for the special overseas admission program. The moment she stepped inside, she noticed the atmosphere had completely changed. The students who had been making noise earlier were now gathered around Jessica Cole. From head to toe, Jessica was dressed in luxury brands—radiant, eye-catching, and almost dazzling. “Wow, Jessica really deserves to be our school beauty.” “Clothes really do make the person. Today we’ve truly had our eyes opened.” “Class president, you’re so generous. We’re all jealous!” Anna paused. She didn’t even know when Jason Lincoln and Jessica had returned. Her gaze flickered. First—wasn’t Jason supposed to be spending time alone with Jessica on the very first day after his rebirth? Second— after seeing the leather skirt, the necklace, the handbag, and the shoes Jessica was wearing… Anna instantly understood. So instead of going home to apologize and have dinner with his mother— Jason Lincoln had taken Jessica shopping for luxury goods. How ironic. In her previous life, for more than twenty years, Jason had never once accompanied her shopping— let alone bought her jewelry. But then— where did he get the money? --- Jason Lincoln was basking in the admiration of his classmates. But the moment his eyes landed on Anna Nolan, his expression darkened. Truthfully, he hadn’t wanted to return to school for evening study at all. He had wanted to find a place with Jessica and spend time alone together. But because Mr. Nolan had interfered with his plans, Jessica insisted that as the top student, he couldn’t skip evening study. So she called a taxi and returned to school with him. Jessica rarely attended evening study sessions. Tonight, she came—for him. Even though the school prohibited flashy dressing, Jessica was clever. She wore her uniform upon entering— and took it off before the teacher arrived. Just like now. Looking at Jessica, glowing like a blooming flower, Jason let out a satisfied breath. The money had been worth it. His Jessica… was truly beautiful. --- But Anna Nolan— was like a thorn. Just as his mood lifted, she appeared. He had heard that the first thing Anna did upon entering class was move Jessica’s desk beside his. Hm. At least she knew her place. But— what was that bet about? Trying to act bold? “Anna Nolan,” Jason said coldly, “you don’t seriously think you can replace me, do you?” His eyes fell on the documents in her hands— the same special admission documents she had handled for him in their previous life. A mocking smile curled on his lips. He reached out, intending to snatch them— but Anna stopped him. “Jason Lincoln,” she said calmly, “it’s easy to talk big when you’ve got nothing to back it up.” “Don’t get ahead of yourself.” “Someone like you, who depends entirely on others…” “I’m not interested in the slightest.” ---
