Chapter 19

Mr. Nolan frowned. He thought it was indeed one of the fastest ways, so he accompanied Wendy Lincoln out of the small one-bedroom apartment. The night was already dark, and there were not many streetlights in the alley. Mr. Nolan reminded Wendy Lincoln not to rush and to watch her step carefully. They walked quickly— only to unexpectedly run into Jason Lincoln and Jessica Cole. Wendy Lincoln: “!!!” Tonight, Jessica Cole felt as if luck itself had finally chosen her. Ever since middle school, Jason Lincoln had secretly liked her but never dared even hold her hand. Yet now, not only had he confessed his feelings openly, he had even bought her luxury goods. Her heart floated with excitement. She had completely forgotten about spending the night with a local thug earlier that evening. Instead, she had accompanied Jason back to school for evening study. And she thoroughly enjoyed the jealous looks from everyone around her—attention she had never experienced before. “Class President, thank you for walking me home after evening study,” Jessica Cole said sweetly. As she spoke, she stood on tiptoe. Wrapping her arms around Jason Lincoln’s neck, her lips intentionally—or perhaps unintentionally—brushed against his cheek before she leaned close to his ear. Jason Lincoln’s lower abdomen tightened instantly. He was just about to wrap his arm around Jessica’s waist when his mother’s furious scream exploded through the quiet night— a voice so sharp it sounded as though she wanted to break his legs. “Jason Lincoln! What are you two doing?!” Wendy Lincoln’s voice was incredibly loud. Combined with the silence of the night, her shout caused neighbors who had already turned off their lights to switch them back on and open their windows to watch. Wendy Lincoln was truly on the verge of exploding. Hearing from the police that the money from her account had been spent by her own son had already infuriated her beyond reason. If she hadn’t been worried that excessive pressure might affect Jason’s college entrance exams, she would never have waited until this late at night, nor would she have tried finding Anna Nolan first. And yet— the “good son” she had worried about all evening was outside flirting with Jessica Cole. Wendy Lincoln might have been stingy toward others, but when it came to herself and Jason Lincoln, she always bought the best quality things. With just one glance, she recognized that the clothes and handbag Jessica was wearing were all luxury brands. Ignoring Mr. Nolan’s attempts to stop her, Wendy rolled up her sleeves and slapped Jessica Cole several times. “Jason Lincoln, you really dared to do this?!” she screamed. “Tell me—did you use that thirty thousand dollars to buy her bags?!” “Jason Lincoln, how could you be this stupid?!” “You shameless little tramp, get over here!” “Take off those clothes and that bag! I’m returning all of it!” “Just like your father—you’re all thieves!!!” Jessica Cole naturally had no intention of standing there to be beaten. The moment Wendy Lincoln started screaming, Jessica immediately hid behind Jason Lincoln, using him as a shield while dodging Wendy’s attempts to grab her. “Aunt Wendy, let’s talk calmly,” Jessica said quickly. “It’s late. Don’t disturb the neighbors.” “You shameless girl, get over here!” “Jason Lincoln, move aside! If you don’t, I’ll hit you too!” Jason quickly grabbed his mother’s wrist before she could yank Jessica’s hair. Seeing the opportunity, Jessica immediately fled. “Class President, I’m going inside first!” she shouted. “Please calm Aunt Wendy down properly.” “It’s not worth it if she gets sick from anger.” “Jason Lincoln, you’re actually protecting her?!” “Daniel! Catch that shameless girl for me!” Mr. Nolan was worried Wendy Lincoln would hurt herself if she continued struggling like this. Besides, as a man—and an elder—it did not feel appropriate to chase after a young girl. So he did not go after Jessica Cole immediately. Then— Crack. Because Wendy Lincoln had reacted too violently while struggling free from Jason Lincoln’s grip, she twisted her waist. Her face instantly turned pale, cold sweat forming on her forehead. Jason Lincoln frowned. “Mom…” “I don’t have an unfilial son like you!” “Jason Lincoln, tell me the truth—did you spend that thirty thousand dollars buying luxury goods for Jessica Cole?!” “Jason… that was the money I saved for your university tuition…” “How could you… how could you…” Wendy Lincoln felt a pain too deep to describe. She had spent years saving every cent. Even when Mr. Nolan occasionally bought her expensive things, she would return them the next day and exchange them for cash to save. If Jason Lincoln truly needed emergency money, she would not have said anything. But spending it on luxury goods for Jessica Cole— that genuinely felt like it would kill her. Wendy collapsed onto the ground, pounding Jason Lincoln’s chest with both hands. Mr. Nolan hurried over to help her up and supported her in his arms. “Jason, help your mother quickly.” “She hurt her waist. We need to take her to the hospital.” Wendy Lincoln refused. Acting almost like a hysterical street woman, she cursed Jason Lincoln repeatedly and shouted that he should simply let her die. Jason frowned and tried to soothe her gently. “Whatever the issue is, we can talk after the hospital examines you.” “Do you really want the neighbors seeing you like this?” Wendy Lincoln cared deeply about appearances. Earlier, she had completely lost control. But now, another thought suddenly struck her— what if gossip spread through the neighborhood tomorrow? That damned Jessica Cole! And Anna Nolan too— was this what Anna meant by “keeping watch” over Jason Lincoln?
