Meanwhile, on the other side. Facing the same modest living conditions, Jason Lincoln was clearly not as quick as Anna Nolan to adapt. He tossed his school bag onto the fabric sofa in the living room. The material wasn’t particularly soft, but it was clean and neatly arranged. Beside the coffee table stood a sunflower that Anna Nolan had probably arranged that morning when she woke him up for school. Anna Nolan had always had that kind of habit. Not to mention the villa in their previous life—even in this two-bedroom apartment, which already had one more room than Anna’s home, it was filled with things Anna Nolan had prepared for daily life. Usually after school, Jason would sit in the living room doing homework or reading, while Anna went into the kitchen to cook a simple dinner for four people. For a moment, Jason was stunned, as if hearing a voice from a hallucination. “Jason, you just do your homework or read. I’ll cook dinner and clean up.” Although Anna Nolan was still a student, she had known how to cook and take care of people since she was ten years old. Sometimes when Jason’s mother came home late from the breakfast stall or was too tired to move, Anna would cook. Sometimes Jason himself would help. The time before evening study used to be the liveliest moment in their home. Although Jason often claimed he disliked the noise, when the house suddenly became this quiet, he actually felt very uncomfortable. He walked into the bathroom to wash his face, but discovered that the towel he had used that morning was still lying in the sink, soaked in dirty water. Immediately, an unpleasant smell hit his nose. He shuddered reflexively and nearly gagged. Normally around this time, Anna Nolan would return home with him. She would fold his blanket, organize his wardrobe, or wash his towel. But today she hadn’t come. Which meant Jason either had to do it himself—or wait for his mother to return and clean it up. In the end, he didn’t want to “dirty his hands.” He went into the bedroom to lie down for a while, only to see that the blanket he had kicked aside that morning was still lying there in a messy heap, looking almost as if it were mocking him. Feeling ridiculed by the mess, Jason took a deep breath and walked to the refrigerator. But the drinks he liked—energy drinks or the expensive beverages he was used to—were nowhere to be found. Normally, Anna Nolan would always replace them with new ones; some she even made herself. Bang! Annoyed, Jason slammed the refrigerator door shut. —Was it really possible that without that father and daughter, he couldn’t even live properly? He slipped his hand into his pocket, took out his phone, unlocked it, and found Jessica Cole’s w******p account, which he had just added today. In his previous life, the thing he wanted most was to have Jessica Cole’s contact information. Even if he didn’t message her, simply watching her w******p status updates secretly would already make him happy. Being reborn was truly incredible. Now he possessed everything he once didn’t dare dream of. 【Jessica, did you get home safely?】 She seemed busy and didn’t reply immediately. Jason didn’t mind and continued typing. 【My mother’s behavior today wasn’t good. I apologize on her behalf. Please don’t ignore me.】 【Jessica, I’m sorry. But I promise this is only temporary. After the college entrance exams are over, no one will stand in the way of us being together.】 【Don’t you like buying bags, clothes, and jewelry? I’ll make money for you. All the money I earn will be yours. In the future, you can just sit on bed counting money every day and do whatever you want.】 Jason Lincoln had never even made promises like this to Anna Nolan. Sometimes Anna Nolan enjoy sitting on the bed counting money. But Jason had never felt that such a life suited her—or that it would make her happy. In his mind, the person who deserved that kind of life was Jessica Cole. Without realizing it, he began to fantasize. In this life, he would still become the richest man. Standing beside him would be the girl he loved—Jessica Cole—sitting on their wedding bed counting money. The thought made his lower abdomen tighten unconsciously. This was the life Jason Lincoln was meant to have. Finally, after struggling to clean up the breakfast stall, Wendy Lincoln returned home. The moment she walked in, she saw Jason lying on the sofa, holding his phone, a faint smile—somewhat indecent—playing on his lips. Her anger exploded instantly. “Jason Lincoln! Who are you chatting with? Hand over your phone!” Although Wendy was a woman, she had once been young too. With just one glance she could tell— her son was in love. Jason was startled by his mother’s shout. Before he could even sit up, she had already rushed over to snatch the phone. He forgot one thing. He was now a grown man, not a boy who hadn’t even finished his exams. And Wendy Lincoln had never imagined that the son she had raised with such effort would one day resist her—pushing her hard enough that she stumbled. Crash! The flower pot that Anna Nolan had once placed on the coffee table fell to the floor. Wendy Lincoln froze in shock. “Jason Lincoln! Are you rebelling now?!” She stepped forward and slapped his back several times. Annoyed, Jason raised his arm to block her. “Mom, do you actually want me to go to college or not?!” Hearing those words, Wendy immediately stopped. Jason knew very well—when dealing with his mother, he only needed to say one thing: college. “You ungrateful brat! What possessed you today?” “Hurry and clean up the living room! I need to change clothes. Later we’re going to Mr. Nolan’s house to apologize to him and Anna.” “Look at you—half an hour at home and you haven’t even taken off your shoes. The blanket is still messy, the towel hasn’t been washed.” “What, are you waiting for your mother to serve you?” “Jason Lincoln, listen carefully. I don’t care what’s gotten into you today. Before the college entrance exam, you must make up with Mr. Nolan and Anna.” “Are you stupid or something? For twelve years we’ve lived comfortably—food ready, things taken care of. Are you tired of that kind of life?” “Hurry and clean up! We’ll eat dinner there. After that you go to evening study, and I’ll come home and sleep. Understood?” Wendy Lincoln went into the bedroom to change clothes. For a moment she considered taking a shower, but there didn’t seem to be enough time. Besides, as long as she changed into something pretty and said a few sweet words, wouldn’t Nolan—that simple man—be easily softened again? Jason Lincoln didn’t pay attention to her at all. He even felt she was exaggerating the situation. Without Anna Nolan, his life would actually be better! But Wendy Lincoln wasn’t that foolish. She quickly went to the Nolan family’s home to find Anna Nolan and her father. When the door was knocked, Anna Nolan happened to be carrying the last dish from the kitchen to the dining table. Mr. Nolan, overwhelmed by the amount of information he had received that day, was sitting alone on the balcony in his reclining chair, smoking. He rarely smoked at home—especially when Anna Nolan was around. “Anna, where is your father? May Aunt Wendy speak with him for a moment?” Before Anna could answer, “Aunt Wendy, weren’t my words clear enough earlier—” Her father’s voice came from behind. “Anna, let Aunt Wendy come in.” Anna frowned. “Dad…” “Just give your father a little time, alright?” After all, even if Wendy Lincoln truly didn’t want to live a life with him, they had still been neighbors looking after each other for twelve years. It wasn’t possible to simply cut off contact overnight.
