Chapter 13

Anna Nolan bowed deeply. In her previous life— she had handled all of these documents for Jason Lincoln. Filling them out. Preparing them. Submitting them. At that time, she had only one thought: She wanted Jason Lincoln to attend this overseas university. Riverdale City University was not bad. But Anna believed that studying abroad would shape a completely different mindset. Jason Lincoln’s success in her previous life had proven that. But in this life— Jason only wanted to follow Jessica Cole. Anna would not stop him. However— what was meant to be hers, she would not give up even the slightest part of it. “You’ve already scheduled an interview with Mu Group?” Ms. Wenny was genuinely shocked. This information was supposed to be known only by the top-ranked student or the homeroom teacher. It wasn’t public at all. M Group was the number one corporate giant in Riverdale City. Every year, they selected a number of outstanding students from major universities to receive funding—students who showed potential to bring future value and profit to the company. Those who qualified could enjoy annual scholarships or research funding. However, in return, the requirements were extremely strict. For example: All projects or technologies developed during their studies had to be handed over unconditionally to the group. They also had to sign a minimum five-year employment contract. If, within a certain period, they failed to produce research or technology that benefited the group or the market, the funding would be terminated. In other words, it was similar to a postgraduate recommendation pathway— but entirely performance-based. It was not a lifelong guarantee, but rather a system that allowed students to develop technology without financial pressure. In her previous life, it was Jason Lincoln who had been selected by Mu Group. However, due to his arrogance and pride, almost all the research and assignments given by the company had actually been completed by Anna Nolan. Because of time differences and in order to match Jason’s schedule, Anna had spent most of her university years staying up late into the night. Jason Lincoln had never noticed her increasingly thin body or the dark circles under her eyes. Every time they finished discussing research over video calls, he would simply hang up. If it hadn’t been for their shared future, Anna Nolan would have ended the relationship long ago. Facing Ms. Wenny’s question, Anna almost wanted to say: “Not only do I know—back in my previous life, I even argued with Mu Group’s CEO, Mark Everest, and cursed his entire ancestry.” Of course, that was an exaggeration. The truth was that Jason Lincoln didn’t understand the research topics assigned by Mark Everest, and secretly cursed him as a blood-sucking capitalist. Anna, seeing him angry, had cursed along with him. But after several interactions with Mark Everest, Anna gradually realized— if Jason Lincoln had even one-third of Mark Everest’s maturity and vision, perhaps she wouldn’t have had to live so painfully in her previous life… and certainly wouldn’t have died at Jason Lincoln’s hands. “Ms. Wenny, please believe in me,” Anna said. “Anna Nolan will not disappoint you.” “Besides, before the final exam results come out, nothing is certain.” “It’s possible Jason Lincoln might change his mind.” “But no matter what, I truly want this opportunity.” “Please help me.” Ms. Wenny frowned. Anna’s grades were indeed good— but in the eyes of sponsors, rank ten and rank one were worlds apart. “Alright, Anna Nolan.” “I’ll give you all these documents.” “As you said, nothing is certain before the results are released.” “Perhaps in a few days, Jason Lincoln will reconsider.” “Whether it’s you or him, I don’t want to ruin either of your futures.” “Fill these out and send them to the address provided.” “Now go back to class for evening study.” “I’ll be waiting for good news from you.” Receiving the stack of documents, Anna bowed again. “Thank you, Ms. Wenny. I will never forget your kindness.” Ms. Wenny smiled. Anna carried the documents back to class as if they were treasure. Just then— her phone rang. “Hello, Dad…” “Anna… Jason blocked me.” After eating in the small one-bedroom apartment, Wendy Lincoln put down her bowl and chopsticks, then returned to her own two-bedroom apartment. Before locking the door, she glanced at Anna Nolan’s skirt with disdain. She had actually wanted to take it with her— but she still needed to maintain appearances. So she placed the skirt on the dining table, in the most noticeable spot, and left. After returning home, she did not take out Jason Lincoln’s towel soaking in the sink, nor did she tidy his room. She only cleaned the living room briefly—including the broken vase Jason had left behind— then went into the bathroom to shower. After bathing, she planned to lie on the bed and chat with handsome men online, enjoying her colorful adult life.
