Chapter 2

My sight blurred and my head pulsated. Sounds of lashes flying in the air and cutting my flesh, shattering me apart. I lost count of time. No sunlight and moonlight reached the depths of this prison. Not to mention the chains on my hand were eating my core away. Draining every drop of magic inside of me, making me wonder whether I am still a mage or not after being suppressed this long. The misery sent me down on my knees as each lash touched my skin burnt. "Urgh!" I groaned with a muffled mouth. The next whip is the last one, bear with it. Bare with it, Lica. You can and you will survive. I chanted these, praying and praying to keep myself strong but for what... I mocked myself. Again, again and again. They swung the lash and it left a burning sensation on my skin. My eyes were long shut, holding the pain and screaming gathering inside of me. "She is done for today."I felt the chain in my hands loosen as I slumped down to the cool and hard ground. 'God, please. Please, give me strength.' No tears left in my eyes, the pain had dulled me from crying and fighting back. My mind has long calmed down, probably right now. I was asleep but my mind was awake, seeing myself alone in the midst of... nowhere. Surrounded by endless lights reaching to the far end. Where am I? Am I dead? If that is, then I guess it is fine... It felt so calm and serene. "Lisa... Lica... Lica, have some water." A cold liquid ran through my parched lips, soaking my dried throat, and, slowly, my eyelids opened. Juliana, my cellmate, was holding me as she poured the liquid into my mouth. "T-Th.." "Shh." She shushed me and pushed me back on her hips. "It's the least I can do." Juliana ran her hand on my head, caressing me like the child I was. I drifted off to sleep when Juliana's lullaby rocked me away. Sending me to a peaceful and dreamless sleep. "Mother." Never in my life have I imagined being rocked to sleep by a criminal. No, it was more than that, by a friend whom I made while in prison. While I am in the darkness myself. "Jul.." My voice was low and my throat hurt from talking. "You are awake." Juliana sat by my side and handed me a folded napkin. She opened it up and the smell of mouthwatering dried bread made my stomach growl in hunger. I pinched the bread and put it into my mouth. My chest heaved down in relief at the food slowly filling my always hungry and mostly empty stomach. "You are such a fighter," Juliana said as she leaned back on my bed, exposing her scarred thighs and burnt feet. I shrugged her off, munching the bread down, and took a sip of water. When the bread was finished, I laid my back on the hard wall, staring out of the cell. "Jul, when was it the last you have seen the sunlight?" Soft laughter left Juliana. "Who knows, maybe when I was dragged here years ago." I sighed and turned my eyes to look at Juliana. Her hair was graying and she was skinny to the bone. I asked her about her sin only to say that she gave birth to a devil. She fought for the child but was soon taken here when the baby was forced to part with her and they took it off somewhere. "Hey, Jul.." Sounds of heavily clattering metals echoed in the air and it sent shivers down my spine. I gritted my teeth and clenched the bed sheet when the guards stopped at my cell. "She had it today already! Go away!" Juliana busted into fury at the guard. The guard didn't bother sparing her a glance as they turned the keys over, opened the cells, and stepped inside. "Criminal 910, you have a visitor." Juliana stepped between me and the guards, staring deadly at them. "F**k your people!" She cursed at them. The guard flinched and reached for the hilt of his sword, slowly unsheathing them. "Jul! It's okay." Hurriedly, I pulled Juliana back and stepped in front of her, blocking her from the guards. "I am coming and..." I turned back to Juliana. "I will be okay." The walk to the guestroom was filled with silence. Sounds of footsteps echoed down the hall and mice running could be heard from the distance. I halted when the corner that normally took me to the torture room passed. "What are you doing? Hurry up." The guard ushered me and we reached the main building. My dull senses sensed a few presences around here and soon we stopped at a luxurious door where a hooded man stood, guarding it. 'This is a no-man.' Even with no magic left, I know that the figure in front of me is not a human nevertheless say, not a living being. Fear slowly crept up upon me... What kind of figure behind this door used a non-living being as a guard? Cursed these people, a high-ranking person now? Why can't they just go to a brothel or pick up some street wh**e? God, please protect me. I beg of you, please. I am too tired to even dream of being free from pain. "Lady Angelica Ador." The hooded figure spoke and I didn't bother to answer him. "You're bleeding." I looked down at my hand where blood trickled down from my fist, barely noticing and feeling the pain. "Here." Doubt was shrouding me, but I took the handkerchief, gripping it with my fist, and dropped it on the floor. Letting my blood dirty the white painted floor. "The cuff?" The guards on my back shook their heads and I let out a sigh, fearing what awaits me behind this door is beyond my physical abilities. "I am ready." I trembled whilst letting out the words. The hooded guy nodded and turned the doorknob slowly, pushing it wide for me to enter. The first breath I took awakened my every sense, smells of dew in the morning seeped into me and my core tingled with rare sensations. Only God knows, how much I love and missed this smell. Smells of freedom and livelihood. My already weakened heart halted as it skipped a beat at the fine man standing in front of me. Despite being covered in a cape, strands of his blonde hair fell down from his shoulder to his waist, and his facial hair was out of place like he had been on a run for years but amidst all that, his emerald-like eyes were truly captivating. I knew him, I do, but when and where? A man as gorgeous as him can't leave my mind but yet, my memories had been hazy since I was imprisoned. "Do you remember me?" His voice quivered, fist clenching, and his eyes were sharps and I gasped for air when bloodlust filled the room. In reflex, I distanced myself away, backed to the wall on my back, and shut my eyes when I felt my legs giving out. "Get away from me!" My breathing had been frantic and sweats formed on my forehead and palms. "I am sorry!" I pleaded. "It was a mistake. So please, please, forgive me." All I see was black, my eyes were shut tightly and I could feel myself trembling down, teeth shaking. A sudden hot breath was on my face. A loud thumping of beats was ringing in my ears, unsure whether it was mine or his. "You.." He growled in my ear, sending sweat trickling down my forehead. I held back my breath and curled my toes, fearing for my life and fear for everything that comes after. Fuck, f**k, f**k. Please, get away from me. No more, I don't want anymore. Don't, don't touch me. "You are bleeding." A warm touch wrapped around my hand and my eyes snapped open when sparks erupted where our skin came into contact, sending parts of memories of the long night back into my mind. My breaths hitched. "Look at me." I shook my head, my lips were quivering, not wanting to look at him, fear and anxiety were poking into my body. It was not my first time feeling something like this, but it was fear was all I knew in recent years. "I said.." His free hand slammed against the wall on my back, locking me. "Look at me." Scared, I raised my head and the moment our eyes met, I gasped for air. This, this feeling... what is it? My cheeks felt hot. "Don't cry." Cry? Am I crying now? Is that why my cheeks felt hot? I had tears, water, and liquid within me. "I am sorry." His eyes flashed over with red for a moment, and his jaw clenched as he let out a hot breath on my face. Then, he shut his eyes and I took this chance to take a deep breath of somewhat... feeling relief. "Let's treat your hand first." Silence engulfed us for Goddess knows how long. It felt like time was playing jokes on me by not moving. I fidgeted with my toes as the man treated my hand, wrapping them in a bandage, but right now, guilt and fear were overwhelmingly strong accompanied by something else at the corner of my heart. "I am here to collect my payment." My eyes snapped to his nonchalant face. "Payment?" My lips trembled and I let out amused laughter. "Payment? Look at me." I lifted my chained hands. Showing the bruises and scars. "How? I have nothing to pay you with. What could I possibly give while being here, in a prison? They took everything I owned. Everything I ever worked for." I said ever so low with gritted teeth. "Your body and soul"
