“James, please send someone else and not me." Luciana pleaded with the manager who paid deaf ears to her pleas. She knew why he wouldn't send Kelly, and wanted her to go. Kelly was her colleague and the company's w***e. Every man who worked there, had gotten in between her legs and they all preferred her to Luciana, because Luciana on the other hand wouldn't cheapen herself. Not only that, I can't forget Michael, She thought. The one who dumped her.
"Lucia, no excuses. You'll cater for the wedding, Kelly has other important things to attend to and besides you're the best caterer around here."
"I know, and I understand but I can't leave my son for two whole wee-"
"Alright, that's enough. My son this, my son that, are you the only single mother around here?" He silenced her with the raise of his hand. "What's it going to be? make income for your son's upkeep, or get fired and go back to your son?"
He got her right where he wanted, she couldn't get fired because this job was her only hope. Catering wasn't something she studied, it was just an in built talent she has had since forever.
"Alright boss, I'll do it. Just give me their file and address, I'll be on it by tomorrow."
"Now you're talking," he took out a brown paper envelope and passed it to her. "There is everything you need to know about them, show respect because Mr. Spitz is not one to mess with."
"Yes Sir." She took the files and walked out to her office. She sighed in exhaustion, as she slumped in her chair. She missed her boy so much, haven't seen him for hours now, she couldn't wait to just finish up the work she had and go home. When she got pregnant, she was scared to tell anyone about it but sooner than expected, her aunt learnt about it and told her parents. She was expecting a scolding, or beatings from them but they embraced her and gave her support till just three months ago, when an old school friend of her dad, Mr. George, reconnected with them.
He had a long chain of good catering companies, in and outside the country but he's based in Venice, Italy. He took her with him, gave her this job and a comfortable place to stay with her child and she's been putting in her best since then. She knew just one call, and James will be fired but she chose not to let her acquaintance to the boss, get into her. So instead of bothering George whenever she had a problem at work, she'd rather fight it on her own. And she planned to do the same for this too.
Why she had a problem about this arrangement, was because, for the three months she's worked here, this was the biggest deal she's had. Never had she catered for such wealthy personalities and she felt sort of insecure.
"What did you do, for James to let you cater for the Spitzs?" She lifted her eyes up from the paper work that laid on her desk, to see who barged into her office.
"Kelly, I did nothing. I really don't want any of these, and I tried to convince him to let you organize for the wedding, but he insisted I must."
"You liar! James would never let you get this while I am around." She shouted.
Luciana drop the pen she held and sat back in her chair, to observe Kelly closely. She wore a very short suit skirt, a white half cut with no bra and a matching suit jacket. Such a w***e, Luciana thought as she assessed the fair and tall lady in front of her.
"What the hell are you looking at black ass?"
She'd normally get mad at Kelly's incessant racist remarks, but not today. She was very tired, and a headache had started to form due to Kelly's childish bicker. "You know what Kelly? Why don't you go ask James yourself?"
She breathed a sigh of relief when Kelly left, after giving her the stink eye and flipping her hair over her shoulder. She packed up her bags, thinking she'd complete the preparations at home since it was already late. Grabbing her hand bag from the desks, she walked out only to bump into a very angry Kelly.
"Watch where you're going, b***h!" She screamed so loud, Lucia had to close her ears with her palms.
What in God's name, is wrong with this b***h? She thought, as she made her way to James office. After saying her goodbyes, she hailed a cab and went home.
"Mommy!" She chuckled, as she heard little footsteps running towards her. Squatting to his level, she opened her arms engulfing him in a hug. "Good evening mommy," he greeted as he pecked her cheek.
She smiled, kissing him back before lifting him off the ground with herself and she took him in her lap. "Good evening my Mickey mouse, hope you've been a good boy?"
"Yes Mommy!" He answered, as he smiled showing off his incomplete teeth.
"You liar!" Maria Goretti, his care giver shouted from the kitchen.
She looked down at her son who looked guilty. "Michael, what did you do this time?"
"I'll tell you what," She turned to see Maria coming out of the kitchen with a plate of macaroni, she gave it to Lucia who took it from her and started feeding Michael. "He fought with a kid at school and also threw a fit when I scolded him."
"Did you do that?" She asked, raising up his face so they could have an eye contact. Her anger vanished the moment he started to cry, she couldn't stand to see him sad.
"Baby don't cry, but don't repeat that again. Am I clear?"
He nodded his head, a smile sneaking its way to his handsome face. He looked so much like his Dad, and that made it almost impossible to forget Michael. She actually wished she could, because whenever she saw her boy, the hurt and pains of how he left her without looking back, came alive and old wounds open up. But she'll ever be grateful to him, because he gave her the one gift that was precious to her than her own life, my precious boy!
"I'll pick him up tomorrow for school, and he'll stay with me till you return." Maria said, as she grabbed her bag all set to go. “Your food is on the table.”
Luciana wished her a goodnight before locking her door and going back to where Michael laid asleep on the couch. She used a loincloth to cover him up before taking her food to eat. She finished everything in five minutes, as she was very hungry and went back to the living room. She took Michael to her room, since they slept together because he was scared of the dark. After tucking him in, she then brought out the file for the Spitzs, whose wedding she was catering for and was to take place in two weeks. Nothing weird, everything looks just fine. After copying out the address, she packed her bags and went to sleep so she could wake early for her flight.

"Please Maria Goretti, take good care of my son." She pleaded with eyes all glassy and voice cracked. She just dropped Michael off at school and now was driving to the airport with Maria.
"Lucia I will, haven't I taken good care of him before? Stop worrying okay?"
"I know. Just I've never been away from him before, I wonder if he'll be able to cope for two weeks without me."
"I will call every morning and night, if that'll make you feel better."
Luciana pulled Maria Goretti into a hug as they alighted the vehicle, waving at her one last time, before walking into the plane that was waiting for her. Every normal person, would be impressed how they sent a private plane to come pick them up, but not her. She was anything but normal because such material things doesn't impress her. Not one bit!
"Rome, here I come." She muttered to herself as the plane took off.
************************************
When they arrived, she couldn't help but look around and marvel at how beautiful Rome was. A Limousine was sent to pick her up from the airport and the closer they got, the more worried she got. She felt like this whole trip was a bad idea and she should have stayed back home with her baby.
"We are here."
She grabbed her bag and got off the car as she took in her surrounding, marveling at how huge the house was.
"This way ma'am," The chauffeur said, interrupting her thoughts. He grabbed her bags as she followed him inside. The inside was glamorous and even far more beautiful than the outside. She just couldn't wait to see her clients who were the owners of this beautiful mansion.
"Please sit, can I offer you anything?" he asked and she shook her head no. "Alright then, the master of the house will be joining you soon."
It wasn't up to three minutes when she heard footsteps approaching. She stood up to greet whoever it was but when the person came into sight, she couldn't utter a word, she just stood there paralyzed in shock. As soon as the thoughts came, so did they vanish. No way on earth, could that be her Michael. Her Michael was poor and simple, this man in front of her was stinkingly wealthy and powerful. He was Kenneth Spitz Jnr, the multi billionaire who owned a lot of self investments and also large shares from his father's wealth. She had never seen the man but she had heard of him.
Keeping her horrible thoughts aside, she pulled herself together and put her hand out for a handshake but he just told her to sit, not taking her hand. His girlfriend, Bernadette, joined them after a minute or two. She was so nice and kind that it amazed Luciana. She was expecting to see a sassy b***h, with long talons for nails and a rotten temper. But Bernadette was just Bernadette. They talked, as they shared opinions on the decorations, cakes, refreshments and everything the wedding needed.
Mr. Spitz said nothing and just kept staring at Luciana, which made her very uncomfortable.
His Fiancée is right here, so why does he keep staring at me? She wondered.
"Please excuse me, let me take this call." Bernadette excused herself, leaving just both of them alone.
He kept staring and she couldn't take it anymore. "With all due respect, it is quite rude to stare and you're making me uncomfortable."
He just chuckled, shaking his head at her then called her after sometime, "Lucia..."
"Yes Sir?" She answered.
"So you really don't remember me?"
Her heart started to hammer in her chest, she didn't want to believe her assumptions were true. "What do you mean sir? this is my very first time meeting you."
"Calabar, four years ago," He saw how her eyes widened in disbelief but mistook it for recognition. "Ah, now you remember."
"Michael," She scoffed. "How could I have mistaken you."
"The name is Kenneth." He fired back, not liking how her tone changed from calm to angry.
"Well that wasn't what you told me, when we first met." She stood up, knowing that coming here was a very big mistake. "And you're Kenneth f*****g Spitz but you lied about being poor." "Maybe I should check the time whenever you greet me, because that may also be a lie!" She screamed at the top of her voice.
"Don't you dare raise your voice at me, I don't owe you anything." He glared at her, wondering why she was overreacting.
She stared at the father of her son, seeing her three year old boy in him. Exactly the way Michael talks when he is angry and how his lips shake when he is trying to control his temper. She had to run away, she had to leave this place. Michael or Kenneth, whatever his name was, was more powerful than she thought and he could take her baby from her. He was two weeks away from his wedding, while she on the other hand couldn't go on a decent date with a man, just because she still loves him. She choked back the sobs that threatened to escape her throat, "Yeah, you're very right, you don't owe me anything."
He wanted to say something but got interrupted as Bernadette walked back in. "Guys, I'm back."
Luciana smiled at her, feeling guilty about the whole issue. Bernadette was so kind and nice to her, they connected so easily but she felt like she was betraying her.
"Since we're now friends, I'll say you stay in our house instead of a hotel." Bernadette suggested, thinking it'd be a good better way for her opt out. "Don't worry, JK would be out of the country for a week."
She began to worry why Bernadette will tell her this, she just hoped she hadn't overheard their conversation.
Some hours later;
They were done with all their budget, Luciana went back to her hotel room since she declined Bernadette's offer. She knew she couldn't talk James into giving this deal to someone else, and she really needed to get out of there as fast as she could. She called the one person she knew could help her. She sat waiting as the call connected.
