Pearl walked slowly back toward the house.
The morning sun had already climbed higher into the sky, warming the quiet streets. From the outside, everything looked peaceful. Inside the house, however, she knew everyone had probably been preparing for hours.
Her steps were calm & steady.
By the time she reached the gate, a familiar figure was waiting on the front porch, her father.
He stood with his arms folded, watching her carefully. “You went for a walk,” he said.
Pearl nodded softly. “I needed to clear my mind.”
He studied her face for a moment. Not searching for any guilt or doubt, just understanding.
Then he opened the door for her. “Well,” he said gently, “your mother has turned the house into a beauty salon.”
Pearl almost laughed.
Inside, the house was full of activity.
The makeup artist was arranging brushes on a small table. Two assistants were steaming the wedding dress. Her younger sister rushed toward her immediately. “Finally!” she exclaimed. “Everyone was waiting for you!”
Pearl smiled faintly. “Sorry.”
Her mother hurried into the room behind her.
“Oh, there you are! We were starting to worry.”
Pearl hugged her briefly. “I’m okay, Mom.”
Her mother nodded, relieved. “Good. Now sit down. We have a bride to prepare.”
Within minutes, the room became a whirlwind of activity.
Makeup brushes moved carefully across Pearl’s face. Hair was curled and pinned into place. The wedding dress was carefully adjusted and smoothed.
Everyone moved around her excitedly, but Pearl sat quietly.
Watching, Thinking & Waiting.
Hours later, when everything was finally finished, Pearl stood in front of the mirror.
The bride, staring back, looked perfect, elegant & radiant.
But behind her calm expression lived a secret that no one else in the room knew.
Her father stepped beside her. “Ready?” he asked.
Pearl looked at her reflection one last time. “Yes.”
Across town, Sipho’s house was buzzing with energy.
Laughter echoed through the rooms as his groomsmen joked and adjusted their suits.
Thabo stood near the mirror, helping Sipho fix his tie.
“You look nervous,” Thabo said casually.
Sipho scoffed. “It’s my wedding day. Of course, I’m nervous.”
Thabo nodded.
But he watched his cousin carefully.
Sipho had no idea. No idea that the day he thought would crown his happiness… Would destroy everything.
“You’ve seen Pearl today?” Sipho asked suddenly.
“No,” Thabo replied calmly.
“She went for a walk earlier,” Sipho said.
Thabo shrugged lightly. “Brides get nervous.”
Sipho laughed. “Yeah. I guess so.”
A few minutes later, the groomsmen began heading toward the cars.
“Let’s go,” one of them called.
“Time to get you married!”
Thabo grabbed his jacket and followed them out.
As they stepped outside, he quickly checked his phone.
A short message appeared. Pearl: Everything is ready.
Thabo slipped the phone back into his pocket and smiled slightly.
The wedding venue was already filling with guests.
Family members greeted each other warmly while soft music played in the background. The bridesmaids took their places, whispering excitedly among themselves. Shakira was standing with other bridesmaids, dressed elegantly, but the uneasy feeling from earlier had not disappeared.
In fact…It had grown stronger.
She looked around the room slowly.
Something about the atmosphere felt strange.
Too calm & Too perfect.
Thabo arrived with the other groomsmen and took his place beside Sipho near the front.
Behind the scenes, one of Thabo’s close friends quietly prepared the screen and projector.
Everything looked normal. No one suspected a thing.
The guests continued arriving until every seat was filled.
Finally, the music shifted. A signal.
The ceremony was beginning.
Everyone stood as the doors at the back of the venue slowly opened.
Pearl entered on her father’s arm.
The entire room admired her. She looked breathtaking.
Sipho smiled widely as she approached. Shakira forced herself to smile as well but the strange feeling in her chest refused to disappear.
Pearl reached the altar and stood beside Sipho.
The pastor smiled warmly at both of them.
“We are gathered here today to celebrate the union of two people who have chosen to walk through life together.”
The guests listened quietly.
The ceremony continued smoothly.
Then the pastor paused and smiled again. “Before we continue, I always like to ask the couple something special.”
He looked at them both. “Did either of you prepare something for each other? A surprise, perhaps?”
Pearl slowly lifted her head. “Yes,” she said calmly.
Sipho looked surprised. “You did?”
Pearl smiled gently. “I wanted to show something beautiful to everyone.”
Guests murmured excitedly.
“Oh, that’s lovely,” the pastor said.
Pearl turned slightly toward the back of the room.
“There’s a screen behind us,” she said. “It’s going to play something special.”
Sipho chuckled, clearly amused. “A surprise video?” he asked.
Pearl nodded. “Yes.”
The room buzzed with curiosity.
Thabo slowly handed a small remote to his friend near the equipment.
The lights dimmed slightly then the screen flickered to life.
Everyone turned to watch.
Sipho squeezed Pearl’s hand. “This is amazing,” he whispered, but Pearl didn’t squeeze back.
The first image appeared. A picture of Sipho & Shakira standing together and holding hands outside a hotel.
The room fell silent. Sipho’s smile disappeared instantly.
Another image appeared, then another, then the messages.
The whispers began. Gasps spread across the crowd.
Shakira’s face drained of color and Pearl stood perfectly still beside Sipho. Watching the truth unfold.
