Chapter Six

Pearl lay on her bed staring at the ceiling. Sleep refused to come. Outside her window the night was quiet, the house wrapped in the stillness that only came before something big. Downstairs, relatives had finally gone to sleep after hours of laughter, storytelling, and last-minute wedding excitement. Tomorrow was supposed to be the happiest day of her life. Instead, Pearl felt like she was standing in the center of a storm. Her phone rested beside her on the bed. The screen was dark now, but earlier that evening it was full of messages that had changed everything. Messages from Thabo. The person who had revealed the truth she never imagined she would have to face. Pearl closed her eyes briefly, but the images returned immediately. Sipho, Shakira. Her fiancé, & her best friend. Together? The betrayal cut deep, but strangely… the pain had faded into something colder and Calmer. Pearl turned her head slowly and looked at the wedding dress hanging across the room. The white fabric shimmered faintly in the dim light. A symbol of love, of commitment and of promises. Promises that had already been broken. Pearl sat up. “If they wanted to play games,” she whispered softly to herself, “then we’ll play.” She grabbed a notebook from her bedside table and flipped it open. The page was blank, but her mind wasn’t. Her thoughts moved carefully, strategically. Tomorrow. Everyone would be there. Both families, friends, guests and witnesses. The perfect stage. Pearl’s pen moved slowly across the page as she began writing down a plan. Every step precise. Every move is calculated. Because if Sipho and Shakira thought they could betray her and walk away untouched… They were about to learn how wrong they were. A slow smile appeared on her face, not one of happiness, but of determination. Across the house, in another room, Thabo paced back and forth. He ran his hands through his hair for what felt like the hundredth time that night. “This is bad… this is really bad,” he muttered under his breath. He had never seen someone react to betrayal the way Pearl had earlier. She hadn’t screamed, she hadn’t cried, she hadn’t thrown things. She had simply looked at him with that calm, quiet expression. And somehow… That scared him more than anything. Thabo stopped pacing and sat down on the edge of the bed. His mind was racing. Should I tell Sipho? The thought came and went quickly. If he warned his cousin, things could explode before the wedding even started. But if he stayed quiet… What exactly was Pearl planning? He exhaled sharply. “She’s too calm,” he whispered. That calmness meant one thing. Pearl wasn’t broken. She was thinking, Planning. And whatever she had planned… It probably wasn’t going to be pretty. Thabo looked at his phone. His thumb hovered over Sipho’s contact. Should he warn him? Or should he stay out of it? His chest tightened. For the first time in his life, he had no idea what the right thing to do was. Morning arrived earlier than anyone expected. The house slowly came alive with movement and voices as relatives woke up, preparing for the wedding day. In the kitchen, Pearl’s mother was already awake. She stirred a pot on the stove while humming softly to herself, her heart full of pride and emotion. Today her daughter would become a wife. After a moment, she wiped her hands on a towel and smiled to herself. I should talk to her. There were things every mother wanted to say to her daughter before marriage. Advice, encouragement, & little pieces of wisdom. She walked upstairs toward Pearl’s room. When she reached the door, she knocked gently. “Pearl?” No response. She smiled. “Still sleeping, I see.” She slowly opened the door. The smile on her face faded instantly. The bed was empty. Pearl wasn’t there. Her mother frowned slightly and stepped inside the room. “Pearl?” She checked the bathroom. Empty. Her heart began beating faster. “Pearl?” she called again, louder this time. No answer. A sudden wave of panic rushed through her. She hurried out of the room and shouted down the hallway. “Has anyone seen Pearl?!” Her voice carried through the house. Within seconds, doors began opening. Relatives stepped into the hallway, confused and alarmed. “What’s wrong?” “What happened?” Pearl’s father appeared at the bottom of the stairs. “What’s going on?” “She’s not in her room!” her mother said anxiously. “What do you mean she’s not there?” “I mean she’s gone!” Murmurs spread through the house instantly. Concern quickly turned into panic. Pearl’s younger sister rushed into the bedroom. “I’ll call her!” she said quickly. She grabbed Pearl’s phone number and pressed the call button. The ringing sound filled the room. But instead of coming from outside… It came from the bed. Everyone froze. Her sister slowly lifted the pillow. Pearl’s phone was lying underneath it. The ringing stopped. Confusion filled the room. “Why would she leave her phone?” someone asked. Pearl’s sister noticed something else on the bed. A small folded piece of paper. “Wait…” She picked it up carefully and unfolded it. Her eyes scanned the message written in Pearl’s handwriting. She read it aloud. “Just went for a walk to cool my mind. I will be back soon.” Silence fell over the room. Pearl’s mother exhaled in relief, placing a hand over her chest. “Oh, thank goodness.” Pearl’s father nodded. “She’s probably just nervous.” Someone chuckled softly. “That’s normal for a bride.” The tension in the room slowly disappeared. Family members began returning to their rooms to continue getting ready for the big day. Hair appointments, makeup, dresses. Everything had to be perfect. Everything had to go according to plan. But across the room, standing quietly near the window… Shakira wasn’t smiling. Her arms were crossed tightly over her chest. Her eyes lingered on the empty bed. Something felt wrong, very wrong. She couldn’t explain it. But the feeling sat heavy in her stomach like a warning she couldn’t ignore. Shakira glanced at the note again. Then at the door. A chill ran down her spine. Pearl wasn’t just going for a walk, she thought. Her instincts screamed at her. Something was coming, Something big, Something dangerous. And whatever it was… It was going to happen today. On the wedding day.
