24 Kaylee “Kaylee…Kaylee. Kaylee, can you hear me?” a woman’s soft voice called out to me. All I could see was darkness. All I could hear were beeps and buzzing noises. And I couldn’t feel much of anything. I knew I was lying down, but that’s about all I knew. When I tried to open my mouth to speak, I found that I couldn’t. Moving my arms seemed impossible, too. And then I began to panic, but only inside my head. My body wouldn’t move at all. “Wiggle your fingers, Kaylee,” the woman said. It took everything in me, but I managed to wiggle the fingers on my right hand. Then I did the same with the fingers on my left hand. Another voice—a man’s voice this time—encouraged me. “Great job, Kaylee.” A hand ran over my toes. “Can you do the same thing with your toes now?” It made no sense
