3. I will find our Luna

BECKY POV ONE WEEK LATER I can’t get up. Never in my life have I been this sick. The nausea is killing me, I can’t seem to keep anything down. It’s gotten so bad that Letty insisted on coming over to take me to the doctor after missing work for three days. The embarrassment of having her see me in pajamas with vomit breath is outweighed by my need for help. I am a proud woman but puking is the least of my worries. I can’t seem to bring my fever down. I’ve tried all of my mother’s home remedies and everything I can find over the counter. As soon as Letty arrived, she threw the blankets off me and took my temperature. “Alright hun, I’m taking you to my doctor because your fever is too high.” Letty coos while rubbing my back. “I’m sorry Letty, you shouldn’t be having to take care of me. You’re my boss, not my mom.” I sound like a baby and that's when I realize just how sick I am. She had to help me get dressed and hold me next to her while we walked to the car. I hate that I need someone to help me while I’m this vulnerable. It’s bad enough. My parents and brother think I still act like a child, but I don’t need my boss thinking the same. I know deep down my family is wrong. A child wouldn’t be able to purchase their first car with money they earned. Every mistake they’ve thrown in my face, I’ve found a way out of. While comfortably living in their home, where I paid rent! I’m the black sheep of the family, not because I make mistakes, but because I don’t make the choices they want me to make. I need to hurl. “Are we almost there?” I asked, trying to keep myself as still as possible as the car swayed a little. “Yes. It’s right there.” Letty pointed at the building as she parked in a spot in front. As soon as we walk in, they take one look at me and lead us to a room. The nurse hands me a paper gown and leaves. When Letty started to leave the room, I freaked out. “Wait! I need your help.” I whimpered. She gave me a reassuring smile and helped me get undressed. I feel so drained and my body aches. In all my life, I’ve never felt anything so horrible. When the doctor walked in, Letty looked my way and I held her hand. “Ms. Ruiz, you’re here because of a fever and nausea.” It wasn’t a question. She was reading her chart, which had all of the information we gave the nurse. I nodded pathetically. “We are going to do some blood work and take your vitals. It’s most likely the flu, but we are going to make sure everything else is okay.” She explained and the nurse came back in with a bunch of vials and a needle. Damn vampire. After they took several vials of my life source, they checked my vitals. The doctor confirmed I had the flu but insisted I wait for my bloodwork to come back before they let me go home. In the meantime, they put on an IV since I can’t seem to keep anything down. ALPHA LUKE POV GOLDEN MOON PACK I was relieved when last month’s mating social was done and over with. More than that, it went so well that we were asked by the elders to host another one this weekend. I’ve had to neglect some of my other responsibilities to make this one just as successful. For a little over three months, I’ve been sending Matt, our Gamma, into Washougal to oversee our business and the pack members we have working in the area. At first, I was worried because he was all too eager to go and stay there for days at a time. Every time he came back, he had a smug look on his face. When it comes to training our warriors and battle strategies, he is not to be fuc*ked with. His fascination with humans, specifically human women, is what has me questioning my decision. Unfortunately, I didn’t have much of a choice. Although I took over as Alpha over ten years ago when I turned eighteen, I had never hosted an event in our territory where several packs would not only be visiting but also staying for a few days. I did my best to remember how things were done in the packs I visited in the past. Not only was the mating social successful, but there didn’t seem to be any issues with Matt. Now Jordan and I are preparing for this weekend, another event we need to make sure is a success. I just hope I find my Luna soon. I’m already twenty-eight and still haven’t found her. I don’t want to take on a chosen mate, but at this rate I may have to if I don’t find her soon. “Don’t worry Alpha, we’re ready.” Jordan, my Beta, assures me. “I know.” I replied, keeping my other worry hidden. Normally, when an Alpha doesn’t have his Luna, the former Luna continues on with her duties as Luna of the pack. My mother helps when needed, but I like to take care of things myself. My parent’s relationship has been strained for a long time now and I don’t want to cause further stress for them. They are fated mates, so whatever problems they are having must be big. Pushing those thoughts to the side, I remember that there is a reason we agreed to host another event. I have two goals, one is to find my Luna and the second is to create new alliances. "Finding our Luna is the only goal. Find my mate or I’ll go on strike.” Art my wolf demands. He’s been threatening to leave me for years. We had both expected to travel in search of our Luna, our other half, before taking over as Alpha. Unfortunately, the problems between my parents were causing issues within the pack. I took over so that things wouldn’t fall apart completely. “I will find our Luna, I promise.” He thinks I don’t care because I focus on being the best leader I can be for my pack. The truth is I long for my mate just as much as he does. I just can’t afford to let myself wallow in self-pity because I don’t have her yet. “I’m now wallowing!” Art growls at me. “Just make sure we have proposals for at least five packs. We also need to pay attention to the pairings that are made. It’s a good selling point if two packs have a lot of mates paired within them.” I tell Jordan as I write a note for myself and ignore Art’s indignation. “Good point, but you may want to find a less mechanical way of saying that.” Jordan points out. I nod my head, getting his point. Most Alpha’s are just as technical as I am, but their Luna’s are another story. If I want to gain alliances, I need to win the Luna’s over as well. When my father handed over his title to me, we only had an alliance with one other pack. My mother’s pack, Night Walker pack in Montana. Her brother, my uncle, is the Alpha there. Since then, I’ve acquired alliances with two other packs. The Blue Moon pack from San Francisco and Midnight Pack in Vancouver. It’s harder to make alliances than one would think. No one is willing to tie themselves to a pack unless both parties benefit from the alliance. Especially since at one point you may need to go to war for your allies. “Trevor is an idiot.” Matt walked into the office, at a decent hour for once. “I had forgotten you would be back today. I’m grateful you found Naomi, now you won’t disappear for days on end.” I narrowed my eyes at Matt, who gave me an indignant look. “That’s not fair. If either you are still virgins, or, in your case, Jordan were a virgin when you met your mate, raise your hands.” Matt raised his eyebrow, looking from Jordan to myself. Jordan scoffed and put down the files he was holding. I sat back and got comfortable for the show. “Not being a virgin is one thing, screwing around with every attractive human in our surrounding area is another. Claiming your interviewing chosen potentials.” Jordan rolled his eyes. “Fuckboy.” Art grumbled. The three of us are over twenty-five and have spoken about taking chosen mates if we don’t find our fated mates by the time we are thirty. Matt took that as the go ahead to “interview” candidates very thoroughly. Even though our wolves didn’t agree. “At least I didn’t mess around with all the shewolfs in the pack, Naomi will appreciate that.” He smiled smugly. “True, there is only a handful of them she will need to deal with.” I chucked because before he became infatuated with humans he had a few shewolfs on rotation. “Anyway, did you handle Trevor?” I really should have gone to take care of him myself. It’s the third complaint this year and it’s only June! He thinks being the head ranger makes him the Alpha of the city. “Yeah, he insists all of the complaints are bullshit and that they were all being disrespectful. I told him this is his last chance. One more complaint and he will take his position as warrior within the pack.” Matt took a seat in front of me and started looking at the files I had waiting for him. “Alright, now that’s taken care of, we can focus on this weekend’s mating social.” I announced and they started to walk out of my office. “Hold on Matt! I’m missing a file for the new bakery we purchased a little over a month ago. The pack lawyer is asking for it.” He did that thing he does where he’s thinking, eyes searching the ceiling. His eyes went wide momentarily before he nodded vehemently and ran out. I could worry about why he got the look of dread when he came to a realization, but as long as I get the file, I don’t care if he has to eat glass.
