Chapter Thirteen A Special Offer It was Wednesday evening and, due to manpower shortages, Don was detailed to run the Area Car for the duration of his 6pm to 2am late shift. It meant his having to drive the despised Morris Marina but, on the other hand, he had some company for once. One of the local special constables, Mike Dawson, had volunteered to crew with him for the full eight hours. Mike was waiting for him at the section office in Hampstead Norreys when Don arrived for duty. Specials were not always popular with regular officers. Although they were vested with full police powers, they received only very basic training and were able to pick and choose what duties they worked. Some were very enthusiastic and took the role seriously whilst others rarely bothered to turn out at all
