Chapter Nine Back to the Old Routine Don returned to his duties as a rural beat officer with decidedly mixed feelings. His four weeks performing the role of Acting Sergeant in Newbury had seriously rekindled his interest in his own career — and returning to the life of a “village bobby” seemed dull and uninteresting by comparison. It was true that Don enjoyed the freedom of working on his own that the section gave him.
