Newbury Magistrates Court
It was ten minutes before the parade was due to commence and Don was already at the station, ready for work. He quickly made his way to the inspectors office where Inspector Lewis was reading the morning newspaper.
The paper was a regular “freebie”, a little perk of the job that one of his staff had brought in for him from the railway station earlier that morning when the mail train arrived.
Policemen had been getting free newspapers this way for generations.
“Sally’s not in till eight this morning,” he said as Don entered the office. “She’s been lumbered with taking Court One today. As well as that, Sergeant Duggan went off early with toothache, so there’s just me here to mind the fort. I’ve sorted the messages out for briefing and left them on
