Clara’s POV:
The Hall of Mirrors at the Polnareff Anniversary Gala was blinding. Crystal chandeliers multiplied infinitely in the glass walls, but all I could focus on was the weight of Jean’s hand on my waist as we glided through the crowd.
"Smile, Clara,"
Jean murmured, his voice barely a vibration against my ear.
"Julian de Varennes has been tracking us with his eyes since we walked in."
"I am smiling,"
I hissed, keeping my lips curved while my fingers dug into the sleeve of his tuxedo.
"But if your grandmother looks at me like I’m a disease one more time, I might break a champagne flute over her immovable hair."
A little smirk formed on Jean’s lips.
"Hold your ground for another ten minutes. The board announces the official heirship tonight. Once the paperwork is signed, the Pierre empire is secured, and your townhouse gets a lifetime legal immunity clause."
"Jean Pierre!"
A sharp voice cut through our quiet argument. Julian de Varennes stepped into our path, holding a crystal glass, a predatory smile stretching across his face.
"And the lovely Mademoiselle Fontaine. Or should I say, the future Madame Pierre? The transition from the gutters to the gold must be insane."
"Julian,"
Jean said, his voice instantly dropping to a deep one.
"I don’t recall approving your invitation to this event."
"Oh, I didn’t need your approval,"
Julian chuckled, leaning in closer.
"I had an invitation extended by someone who actually cares about the integrity of the Pierre legacy. Enjoy your final moments of the act, Jean."
Before Jean could reply, the chiming of a spoon against a glass echoed through the massive ballroom. It was Madame Beatrice.
"Ladies and gentlemen,"
Beatrice’s voice sounded across the silent room.
"Tonight, we celebrate decades of the Pierre legacy. In accordance with my late husband’s will, it is my duty to formally declare the successor to the JP International empire."
Jean took a step forward pulling me along with him.
"However," a voice interrupted from the back of the room.
The crowd gasped as Julian de Varennes walked confidently up the steps of the platform, pulling a wireless microphone from his jacket pocket.
"Before any documents are signed, I believe the board and the press deserve to see the actual foundation of this sudden, miraculous love story."
"Security," Jean barked, his eyes flashing dangerously.
"Iggy, get him off the stage."
Iggy moved instantly, but Julian was faster. He pressed a button on a small remote, and the massive digital screens came to life.
The room went dead silent. Projected in high-definition was a scanned copy of a legal document. My signature was perfectly visible at the bottom right next to Jean’s.
At the top, the bold letters read: *FINANCIAL COMPENSATORY MARRIAGE CONTRACT*.
Highlighted in bright yellow was the clause detailing the exact millions to be deposited into my account in exchange for one year of domestic service.
"A fake marriage," Julian shouted into the microphone.
"Jean Pierre didn't find love. He bought a peasant girl from the slums to defraud his grandfather’s will and keep his billions!"
The media surged forward immediately.I couldn't breathe.
I looked at Jean. He was staring at the screens, his expression entirely unreadable.
"Silence!"
Beatrice’s voice thundered over the microphone as she snatched it from Julian. She looked down at Jean, her face in absolute fury and disgust.
"Jean Pierre, you have brought a permanent stain onto this family’s name. hence you are hereby stripped of your title as CEO. The board will now recognize me as the sole inheritor of JP International."
She turned her glare directly to me. "And as for your little neighborhood, Mademoiselle... the legal protection Jean promised you was never officially filed. The city court dismissed the injunction an hour ago. The police are already en route with the demolition order."
My heart stopped beating. "What?" I whispered, my voice breaking. "No. Jean, you said it was paused. You said we were safe."
Jean finally looked at me, a flicker of genuine panic breaking through his facade. "Clara, listen to me. I had the lawyers working on it. Beatrice blocked the filing—"
"You lied to me," I choked out, tears finally spilling over my eyelashes.
"You used me. You used my family, my home, everything just to fight your grandmother for a checking account!"
"Clara, wait!" Jean reached out, his hand gripping my wrist.
"Don't touch me!" I screamed, ripping my arm away from his grasp.
I turned and sprinted through the crowd, ignoring the flashing cameras, the shouting reporters, and the blinding lights. I pushed through the glass doors of the gala and burst out into the dark Paris night, running directly into the pouring, freezing rain, completely shattered.
Jean’s POV:
The moment the glass doors slammed shut behind Clara, the Hall of Mirrors felt entirely empty, despite the hundred reporters screaming my name. My hand was still extended in the air where I had tried to catch her.
The heat of her skin was gone. The smell of her cheap laundry soap was gone. And suddenly, the multi-billion-euro empire around me just felt like a pile of worthless trash.
"There is a way out of this, Jean," my grandmother’s voice sliced through my thoughts.
Beatrice stepped down from the stage, sliding a fresh, heavy document onto a table next to me.
"Sign this. It states that you were a victim of extortion by that gutter girl. It liquidates her property immediately and returns your full inheritance rights. You can save your empire tonight."
I looked down at the paper. The text blurred. All I could see was the memory of Clara’s eyes flashing with absolute betrayal before she ran into the storm.
"Jean," Julian sneered, stepping up beside Beatrice with a disgusting, victorious smile.
"Don't be an i***t. It’s billions of euros vs a girl from the streets. It's not a real choice."
Slowly, I reached into my breast pocket and pulled out my gold fountain pen.
Beatrice smiled, her posture relaxing. She thought she had won. She thought everything, including my soul, had a price tag.
I unscrewed the cap. I lowered the pen to the paper—and then, with a slow, deliberate twist of my hands, I tore the document completely in half. I tossed the ruined pieces onto the floor at Beatrice's feet.
"You're right, Julian,"
I said, my voice dropping into a dangerously calm baritone as I looked up.
"It isn’t a choice at all."
Beatrice gasped, her face draining of all color.
"Jean! If you walk out that door, you leave with absolutely nothing! You are no longer a Pierre!"
"Then I am finally free," I said.
I ripped off my bowtie, tearing it from my collar and dropping it onto the marble floor. I turned my back on the inheritance I had spent my entire life fighting for. None of it meant anything if the bulldozers destroyed her world at dawn.
As I walked toward the exit, Iggy stepped into my path, his face completely deadpan.
"Sir," Iggy said quietly.
"Your grandmother’s accounts are already freezing your assets. Your personal vehicles are locked down. You don't have a car."
"I don't care," I said.
"I'll run across Paris if I have to."
"You don't have to,"
Iggy replied, tossing a heavy silver set of keys into the air. I caught them effortlessly.
"Take my personal truck. And Monsieur Pierre?"
I paused at the threshold. "What, Iggy?"
"Julian’s offshore tax files just finished downloading to my secure drive,"
Iggy said, a faint, dangerous smile crossing his face.
"I'm leaking them to the federal police in five minutes. Go get your wife."
I didn't waste another second. I burst through the doors sprinting towards the parking lot. The Pierre name was dead and my billions were gone, but as I started the engine, I realized it was the best damn investment I had ever made.
