“Alex, Alon, Alira,” Xenia called, her feet taking her far from their belongings and walking into the crowd at the airport. Where did her kids go? She had been searching for them for some minutes but they were nowhere to be found. She was almost on the verge of bursting into tears.
“Alex…Hello please, did you see these kids anywhere?”
Going into the crowd, Xenia asked anyone she came across not even bothering to look at their faces, showing them the picture of her kids on her phone.
“No, I didn't.”
She walked to the next person.
“Please, did you see these kids anywhere?”
“I saw them chasing a butterfly that way. I didn't see them anymore after a while.”
Xenia walked in the direction the person pointed to her and asked the next person she came across with.
“Please, did you see these kids?”
“No.”
It was past an hour when she asked almost everyone if they had seen her children but none of them replied in a good way. Some only said they saw them passing through somewhere. Some said they didn’t.
She squatted and placed her hands on her face. What was she going to do now? She had even asked the security, and they were thoroughly searching for the children.
“Ma’am, we got the CCTV,” one of the security men came to her back and informed her. She quickly stood up and followed him.
The CCTV showed when Alira saw a butterfly that caught her interest. It was a known fact that she was a lover of butterflies and she chased after it. Then, Alex whispered to Alon before they both followed their sister. The video kept playing until they caught the butterfly and someone suspicious came to their back.
Xenia wanted to scream for her children to run. Her hands pointed at them as a few droplets of tears fell from her eyes. No..no. She saw two men creep behind the children.
“No..run.”
She screamed at the screen as the men grabbed the kids and carried them away. Her head shook in denial.
“I think. They have been kidnapped,” the security man announced. Or perhaps those were child traffickers.
Xenia buried her face in between her palms. Kidnapped? But by who? No one knew them in this city and she has only just arrived here after four good years. Who would have taken her children away from her?
They were her life. Her heart. They were everything to her. She wasn’t sure that she would be able to live without her kids by her side. These past few years, they became her source of joy, and she had only strived so hard to succeed because she wanted them to have a great life without lacking anything.
She wanted to give them all that she never had as a kid. Goodies, clothes, toys? Whatever it is. She wants to give them and make them live a good life of no lack at all.
“Ple…please do something. I can’t live without them.”
“Madam, please be strong. We are going to inform the police about this and conduct a search for your children. Do not worry, we’re going to find the kidnappers,” assured the security men.
Xenia thought of where those kidnappers would have taken her children to. Were they alright? Do they miss her? Have they given them food? The thought of them crying and screaming for her made her heart clench. It was all her fault.
For one, she shouldn’t have returned to this jinx of a city. It always brings her bad luck and two, she was a bad mother for not looking at her children. She was a bad mother for letting them leave her sight without knowing. They must have screamed for her several times already.
Ring! Ring!
Just then, her phone rang in her hand and she stared at the caller’s ID. Rani was written boldly. It was her friend. The only person who knew that they would be returning and the person who helped her leave.
“He..hello?”
“Xenia. Are you in the city already? Why is your voice like that? What happened? Are you alright, dear?”
“I’m… I’m fine. The ki..kids..”
“What happened to the kids? Are they alright?” Rani asked in concern.
“They’re missing. They got kidnapped.”
“What?”
“I…I don’t know how. One mo..moment they were with me but in the next, they were nowhere to be found. I don’t know what to do right now, Rani. They are my world.” Her tears flowed freely as she explained to her friend at the other side. She could feel her head pounding, her thoughts hitting her like waves.
“Calm down.. Calm down, Xenia. I’ll inform everyone I know that can help with this. The kids are going to be fine, alright. I’ll come to you immediately.”
Xenia slipped the phone in her pocket and walked around the security room as the men there called the police and conducted a search around the airport. Who must have kidnapped her poor innocent children? They were so small and did nothing for anyone to ever kidnap them.
After some minutes of no report from the security men, Xenia tapped her feet on the floor and tried thinking to come up with something. Was there anyone that could help her in this situation? Someone that can help her find her kids. If she doesn’t see them, she might just go crazy.
Just then, her mind flashed to someone important. Someone so powerful. Someone influential that can help her in this situation. Although he doesn’t know anything about the kids, he was her last hope. He was the last hope she has right now and if it doesn’t work, she doesn’t know what she will do next.
And so, Xenia rushed out of the security room and out of the airport. He might be the only person that would be able to help her right now.
