The uncharming movement with which Tessa jumped into the kitchen was more laughable than terrifying.
“Roxburgh!” the officer said, hardly impressed by her action. “Long time no see!”
“Perkins,” Tessa said, disappointed. “Did you make that noise?”
“I just came in, I haven’t touched anything. Let alone overturned something or so.”
“Did you see someone run away?”
Agent Perkins put his weapon back in the holster. “No,” he said briefly. He quickly toured the house without paying any further attention to Tessa.
Norman peeked out. There were two police cars in front of his house. The beacons were still on. One of the officers was now walking around his house. He could not see the other for the moment. However, there was no trace of intruders. Still, he was sure he had seen someone.
