A man in black jeans and a hoodie over his head picks up the little cute girl and a boy I've been watching since I sat here. He might be their dad or uncle, but for some reason, I feel very uneasy about him walking away with them. I look away to try and ignore them but I find myself sprinting towards them. "hey!!!" I called out. I can see his back go stiff before he slowly turns. "Hi, excuse me, are they your kids?" I ask politely, before he can get a single word out, the little girl answers for him. "He's not my daddy, he's taking us to daddy, right Mister?" She blabs on, her eyes sparkling. "you don't know this man?" I ask the girl cautiously, grabbing the boy's hands. "No, he says he's daddy's friend." She covers her lips whispering like it's some secret. It all happens in a spare second, the man pushes me to the floor and dashes off. I fall cradling the boy's head. I pick him up and begin to run towards the small crowd in front of a car, the man is on the ground with two men on top of him, holding his arms behind his back. I don't see the little girl or the other man around and my heart beats. There's a bang from the car window and I open it to find the little girl. She jumps Into my arms, her eyes wide and scared, she has tears rolling down her face. She grabs onto me for dear life. The kids both hold on to themselves and my neck. I just want to have a good relaxing time at a kid's park and this happens. A frantic, scared-looking young woman is sprinting towards us, and there is a huge, angry man behind her on his phone, angrily barking words to the person on the other line. He stops talking when his eyes land on the kids in my arms and his attention shifts to the man on the floor. He looks livid, and the boy screams. "Daddy," and the girl's head perks up at that. His face turns into one of relief as his eyes go over the kids, before going towards the man held down to the ground. He turns the man and lands a hard punch to his nose, "You will regret the day you ever decided to lay your filthy hands on my kids." He tells the man darkly, and a tremor passes through my body at his dark tone and the finality in his words. "First thing tomorrow morning, I want you out." He tells the frantic lady who appears to be the nanny, staring daggers at her, she only nods her head looking scared. The man turns towards us and the girl lunges for him, he breathes her in and kisses her face all over, he reaches for the boy's head and kisses him too. "Are you okay baby?" He asks softly looking towards both kids, they are twins then. They both nod but I shake my head. "He's legs are injured and you might want to have her checked too," I inform the hunk of a man in front of me. He finally notices me and looks at me with questions, I flush, "Ohh, I was with the kids when the incident happened." I tell him. I hand the kids over to him, bidding them goodbye and walking away without waiting for a reply. The day was eventful enough and now the kids are fine, so I head back home. Two days later, it's Sunday and I head inside my mother's apartment, before I know it, a small body rams into mine, and I chuckle, knowing it's my little brother. "s**t, s**t, s**t, f**k me," I groan after checking the time and rush to get ready as panic settles in. It's past 8 and I'm late for work. The air feels tense as I step into the room, the ding of the elevator alerts the open-spaced room, there's a small group bent over a table. The rest of the room turns to the distracting sound in the very quiet room, except for the small group bent over at the desk. A beautiful woman raises her head from the table and she smiles widely when she sees me. "Kimberly Martins, you are the new interior designer right?" She says walking up to me, extending a handshake. "Yes." I nod nervously. "Well you are right on time, come, Mr. King, the boss is right here." She gestures for me to follow her. The last man bent over at the desk stands and turns towards me. I freeze. The kid's dad from the park incident is standing right in front of me, in my new workplace, staring right at me. "Mr. King, this is Kimberly, the new interior designer I told you about." The lady says never breaking the grin on her face. I am surprised, he's the boss, my boss? He stares at me intently for a while before announcing, "We are done here for today, Joey, make the rest of the conclusions and bring the files to my office." He walks out into the elevator. After settling in and getting used to my new office stall, the pretty brunette lady informed me that Mr. King would see me 30 minutes after our lunch break, when he's done with his meetings. I head out with the pretty brunette, whom I now know is Joey for our lunch break. She offered to keep me company and I couldn't be more grateful. On our way out the building, there are two women standing in front of the exit door in the lobby. Does this place not have a dress policy? They look like they are heading to a strip club in a non sexy way. "Hii, Joey!!" The taller blond calls out way too excitedly and Joey grimaces. "Anna." Joey responds looking bored and the woman gasps dramatically. "Is this the new girl?" She asks, staring me up and down. "Yes." Joey still replies looking uninterested. "Hii, I'm Anna, I'm sure you must have heard about me, I'm quite popular around here, I'm also very close to Mr. King." She announces proudly. I don't know why she's telling me all of this but I merely nod at it and she doesn't look too pleased at my nonchalance but I ignore and bypass her to get past the exit and Joey does the same. "What's wrong with her?" "Her father is a state senator, she got her job on a platter, so she likes to think the world revolves around her. Don't pay any mind to her, she likes to stake her claim on Mr. King to anyone who cares to listen." Joey explains. "Ohh." I want to ask who she is to Mr. King but I don't want to appear too curious. Joey takes me to a cafe down the street, it's where all the employees go. "Hi Sam!" Joey calls to a man walking towards us. "Hi Joey." He says, shyly glancing at me. "Kim, this is Sam, the brain of the tech department, Sam, this is Kim, the new interior designer." We both shake hands and he joins us on our table. I see our boss, sitting at the far end of the cafe with a man. "Mr. King is having his meeting here?" Joey turns. "Oh, yes, that's his close friend and business partner Nathan." We keep eating, and I find Sam very interesting. We have many things in common, although he's very shy, I find it charming. "Mr. King is about to burn a hole through your head at this rate." I'm surprised by this and when I look up, truly he's staring hard at me, almost a glare. What did I do? I rush out of the cafe after Mr. King refuses to back down from the unnerving stare down battle. I wonder what everyone's problem is today.
