Chapter 4

Meanwhile, Avelyn’s head was on fire. She had waited for one hour, sulking, for Lyena to return. As the time passed, she had begun to get worried. ‘Why isn’t she home yet?’ She started to pace around the room, thinking of Lyena. ‘I must call her’ she thought and dialed Lyena’s number. Her blood ran cold as she heard the ringing of the phone from the couch. ‘Oh God!’ Avelyn cautiously stepped into the night, dressed in all black, and with a cap that covered most of her face, so she would not catch the eyes of the predators out there. She went towards the direction on which Lyena went, and started walking ahead, eyes searching for her sister. Peeking in the small alleys, straining her ears for a sound, she searched, yet couldn’t find anything, until she arrived at an alley, which had a spilled dustbin near it. ‘Disgusting’ she thought as her nose caught its foul smell. She glanced around the spilled contents with uninterested eyes, until she caught something familiar. ‘Lyena’s bracelet’ she quickly picked it up with her trembling hands. All about staying out of sight forgotten now, she ran around and shouted her sister’s name. “Lyena!” Her sound carried for a distance in the quiet road. Making people, who came towards the road turn around, to avoid trouble for themselves. She ran into the alley, and screamed as she saw a body of a man, bathing in his own blood. Her pulse rate increased and she ran in the other way, towards the park. “Lyena….!” Tired from running around and screaming, Avelyn came home with a troubled mind. She fell on the sofa, putting her hands on her head. “What have I done?” She continuously mumbled as her hands started to shake, from the fear of losing her only family. She regretted letting her anger out on Lyena. She grabbed her own hair pulling them, as the tears started to freely down her cheeks. She hated to cry, and at that moment, she hated herself too. The following day, she had just run to the police station when the morning came. The police had promised to do everything they can, to find Lyena, although both parties; Avelyn and the police, knew that there were all too many cases showing how investigations had failed in. But, Avelyn decided to hold on to the thin thread of hope. ///// AFTER THREE WEEKs "Then what the hell were you all doing till now?" She asked, enraged by the police officer's words. "I understand your situation Miss Avelyn but please be patient. We haven't stopped searching for her. Don't worry, we'll find her" the police officer chose his words carefully in front of Avelyn. He knew all too well that young people are impulsive and tend to be quick tempered in matters like this. As a middle aged police officer, he didn't want this young girl to fall in trouble because of her temper. Avelyn scoffed at the officer’s words. "So you haven't stopped searching for her huh?" Avelyn started again. "Well, maybe you have already stopped searching for her! You should have found her by now. Why is this taking so long?" "Miss Avelyn, please understand. We are doing our best in this matter. Now, you should go home. We'll inform you if we make any progress" the officer said. Avelyn was breathing rapidly in anger, glaring at the police officer sitting in front of her. The boiling anger inside her wanted to grab him by his collar and slam his head on the table. It has been a week since Lyena has been lost and till now, there's no trace of her sister. This made her think that the police was not putting any effort to find her sister. So she came in the police station, fuming like an angry bear. Looking at the officer, she thought that there was no use of just sitting there. "You better find her soon" She said in a dangerously low tone. Surprised by her attitude, the officer looked up at her, who had a determined line to her face, and watched her stepping out of the office. "I must find her no matter what" Avelyn said to herself, and walked into the street full of strangers.
