Avelyn stepped out through the glass doors of the huge building. Her brown coat hugged her body to protect her from the strong and cold winds outside. It was the usual time for her to go home after working. Most of her employees had taken their leave in the evening, so the building itself looked a little empty.
She pulled out her phone from her bag while climbing down the set of steps, and stopped on the pavement. “Hello!” After a few rings, she heard the call being answered.
“Nathan, I’m going to inspect our manufacturing factory now. Can you check the files for me today?” She heard a sigh.
“Alright, I’ll do it,” Nathan let out a chuckle. “Being CEOs is not as easy as we thought, right?”
Avelyn’s lips tugged upwards. “It has its benefits, I can say. People think we are cool….I’ll send you the files in a minute.”
“Okay.”
“Goodb-“
Avelyn didn’t get to finish the word as she was suddenly pulled backwards by her bodyguards. Her phone fell on the floor, and all Nathan could hear from the other side was gunshots and screams and shouts. Avelyn quickly looked around in surprise, and saw that some men in black masks and clothes with guns were surrounding her and her bodyguards. Two of her bodyguards were bleeding on the floor, and she quickly picked up the gun that had fallen at her feet.
“Hello? Avelyn! Are you alright?” She could hear Nathan’s panicked voice calling out to her, and she instinctively knew that he would be there soon to support her. All she had to do was to hold up until he arrived.
She loaded her gun, and took her aim as she stepped forward. She felt the adrenaline rush in her veins, and followed by her bodyguards, started firing. She felt just like the old times when she was The Ghost with her Shadows. Afterall, every bodyguard of hers was a Shadow in the past.
People were running away scared of the shooting. The only ones that were remaining at the scene were the black masked men, Avelyn and her bodyguards. The masked men seemed to hesitate for a second when Avelyn started firing back, but they quickly regained their composure and started shooting. Though it boosted Avelyn’s confidence, it was only when she was shot in the leg, from behind, that she realized the enemy’s hesitation was a fake. Just a diversion. It was all to gain Avelyn’s full attention on them, and to make it easier for the men that were approaching her from the back.
Avelyn fell down, imbalanced, gripping her bleeding thigh from her left hand. The masked men in black didn’t give her a second to reflex and look around as they pressed a cloth with a strong smell on her face, covering her nose and mouth. Avelyn struggled, tried to escape from the arms that were restraining her movement, and tried not to inhale the intoxicating chemical that had already begun to numb her senses. But for how long can she hold her breath?
She shook her head vigorously, trying to free herself, but the hands that were holding her firm keeping her in her place ensured that she was not to release herself. “There is no escape b***h!” A sinister voice snarled in her ear. Her lungs started burning, her brain went numb and automatically her system forced her to take a breath.
Before her heavy eyelids trapped her in the dark, she saw some of her men were still fighting, while some of them laid on the cold cement floor. Were they unconscious or dead? She really couldn’t tell.
