Chapter 1His arms were extended, locked at theelbow and steady. He sighed down the barrel of the gun, and I watchedas his chest fell, all the air leaving it in the last exhalationbefore he pulled the trigger. I breathed with him, felt the airleaving his lungs and the world fall quiet around him. I could feelhis concentration, solid around me, impenetrable. His finger curled around the triggerand he squeezed, steadying the weapon with his other hand under thebutt of the gun. He wore fingerless gloves, and I heard the gunclick, the bullet swoosh out of the chamber. It was a perfect hit, right in betweenthe eyes.
