Episode 3:The Man Behind the Shadow

967 Words
The first thing I felt when I opened my eyes was a pounding headache. The second was confusion. White ceiling. White walls. The faint scent of antiseptic. Hospital. I sat up too quickly and immediately regretted it. The room spun. A sharp pain shot through my chest. The rejection bond. The memory hit me all over again. Ethan. Sophia. The gala. The humiliation. The rejection. My stomach twisted. A soft knock interrupted my thoughts. A nurse entered carrying a clipboard. "Good morning." Morning. I had spent the entire night here. "What happened?" I asked. The nurse smiled gently. "You collapsed outside Riverside Park." I frowned. "I did?" She nodded. "A passerby called for help." I couldn't remember much after reading the termination email. Everything afterward was a blur. The nurse checked my chart. "You're dehydrated and exhausted. The emotional stress didn't help." Emotional stress. That was one way to describe having your entire life destroyed in a single evening. I glanced around the private hospital room. Private. Expensive. Far beyond what my insurance would cover. A knot formed in my stomach. "How much do I owe?" The nurse looked surprised. "Nothing." I blinked. "What?" "The bill was already paid." Confusion replaced anxiety. "Paid by who?" "I'm sorry. We weren't told." After she left, I sat quietly on the edge of the bed. Someone had paid my hospital expenses. Why? I didn't have wealthy relatives. I didn't have secret admirers. And after last night, I doubted I had many friends left. The mystery stayed with me as I changed into my clothes and left the hospital. Outside, reality hit harder than ever. People recognized me. Some whispered. Others openly stared. A group of young women walking past immediately lowered their voices. I still heard them. "That's her." "The rejected mate." "The one Ethan dumped." Heat rushed to my face. I turned away and kept walking. By lunchtime, social media had become a battlefield. Every news outlet had picked up the story. Videos from the gala were everywhere. Some comments defended me. Most didn't. The headlines were brutal. ALPHA HEIR CHOOSES SOCIETY BEAUTY OVER SECRET MATE. WHO IS AVA HART? REJECTION AT THE GALA SHOCKS ALPHA ELITES. I shut my phone off. I couldn't do this. Not today. Maybe not ever. Meanwhile, on the top floor of Sterling Global Tower, another conversation was taking place. The office stretched across an entire floor. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the city skyline. Power radiated from every inch of the room. The man standing near the glass wall barely noticed the view. His attention remained fixed on a tablet. A photo filled the screen. A woman with dark hair. Sad eyes. A black dress. And unmistakable heartbreak. Ava Hart. Damien Sterling studied the image carefully. The room remained silent. No one dared interrupt him. Finally, his assistant cleared his throat. "Sir?" Damien didn't look up. "Continue." The assistant swallowed. "The woman from last night is Ava Hart. Twenty-four years old. Former marketing strategist at Blackwood Global." Former. The timing wasn't lost on him. "Anything else?" "She was publicly rejected by Alpha Ethan Blackwood." Damien's eyes hardened slightly. He already knew that part. The video had spread across every media platform within hours. His assistant hesitated. Then continued. "There's something unusual." Now Damien looked up. The assistant placed a file on the desk. "We couldn't find records before age six." Silence. Damien opened the file. Page after page. Nothing. Missing information. Incomplete records. Inconsistencies. A trace of interest appeared in his expression. "You're sure?" "Yes, sir." The assistant shifted nervously. "There are significant gaps." Damien looked back at Ava's photograph. His silver eyes narrowed. Something about her felt familiar. Not her face. Not her name. Something deeper. A feeling he couldn't explain. Then his gaze dropped to a small silver necklace visible around her neck in one of the images. His entire body froze. The room suddenly felt colder. "Zoom in." The assistant obeyed immediately. The image enlarged. The necklace became clear. A silver crest. A crest Damien knew very well. His heart skipped once. Then twice. Impossible. For several seconds, nobody spoke. The assistant watched carefully. In ten years of working for Damien Sterling, he had never seen his boss lose composure. Not once. Until now. "Sir?" Damien slowly sat down. His gaze never left the screen. That necklace shouldn't exist. Not outside the Sterling family. Not unless— No. It couldn't be. And yet... The evidence sat directly in front of him. His fingers tightened around the tablet. "Find out where she got that necklace." The assistant nodded. "Immediately." "And bring me every record connected to Ava Hart." "Yes, sir." The moment the office emptied, Damien looked back at her photograph. The rejected woman everyone was laughing at. The woman Ethan Blackwood had discarded. The woman who unknowingly carried a symbol connected to the most powerful Alpha bloodline in existence. A slow, thoughtful expression crossed his face. For the first time in years, Damien Sterling was genuinely interested in someone. And that alone made Ava Hart dangerous. Across the city, completely unaware of the investigation unfolding around her, I stepped into my apartment building. The elevator doors opened. I walked toward my unit. Then stopped. A large envelope rested against my door. No stamp. No return address. Just my name written neatly across the front. Ava Hart. A chill ran down my spine. Slowly, I picked it up. The envelope felt unusually heavy. Inside was a single photograph. I stared at it. My breath caught. The picture showed a little girl. No older than five. Standing beside a woman I had never seen before. On the back, someone had written six words. Your past is not what you think. My heart began to race. Because the little girl in the photograph... Was me.
