A metal object had pierced clean through my chest, leaving me at high risk of infection.
The doctors worked with sweat beading on their foreheads, doing their best to clean out my wound properly. I lay in the operating room, feeling my vitals slowly stabilizing.
Finally, this whole nightmare was almost over.
Or so I thought.
Suddenly, the operating room doors banged open. Victoria stormed in, all arrogance and fury, shoved past the protesting doctors and snatched the syringe right out of a lead doctor's hand.
"Who gave you permission to operate on her?!"
Victoria roared.
"Stop right now! Who authorized this?!"
Her demeanor was vicious, and all the doctors in the room traded stunned, nervous looks. I'd just started feeling a little better, but her shout was so loud it made my eardrums ring.
"Miss Bennett, this patient needs emergency surgery," the doctor said. "Please step outside."
Victoria's eyes went cold. She gave the doctor a scathing, contemptuous glare, then grabbed a scalpel and pointed it straight at her. "Get out. That's an order!"
The doctor was too terrified to say another word. She scurried toward the door pressed flat against the wall, and all the other medical staff fled before they even had time to take off their gloves.
I lay half-dead on the operating table. I didn't dare move even an inch, but even so, my half-treated wound immediately started oozing fresh blood. A sharp, burning pain shot through my chest.
"What the hell... do you want?"
I forced the words out through gritted teeth.
A vicious grin tugged at Victoria's mouth. She tapped the scalpel against my cheek. "What do you think? I want you to die right here, of course."
"You wouldn't dare!
"Lay a finger on me, and you'll regret it!"
My voice was so weak, even my threat didn't carry an ounce of weight.
Victoria just laughed even louder at that. The cold metal of the scalpel pressed against my skin, and a jolt of cold, clawing dread shot through me.
"You really think anyone's coming to save you today?
"How naive you are, Elena. You're the one who drew the short end of the stick by not dying in that elevator. If you'd kicked the bucket there, you wouldn't be in for all this pain now."
She slipped on gloves and a mask, then started clinking the instruments around on the surgical tray.
My stomach dropped instantly, every alarm bell in my head blaring.
I tried to push myself up off the table, but the meds coursing through my system had turned my limbs to lead. I couldn't move an inch.
"You tampered with the elevator!" I rasped, mustering every last scrap of strength I had to yank on the hem of her coat.
"Yep.
"I wanted you to die right then and there, but turns out you've got nine lives, like a damn cat," Victoria snickered.
"And to think you only walked away with a tiny little injury on top of it all."
She was clearly furious my wound wasn't worse.
Blood was pouring out of my gash, soaking my entire body red, but to her, that was nothing more than a scratch.
"Lucian will never let you get away with this!"
She wrenched her coat out of my grip, a lazy, cold smirk playing on her lips. "He'll never find out. And even if he did, he'd never believe you."
Victoria was fully geared up now. She moved the tip of the knife slowly toward my chest.
I tried to thrash away, but my muscles wouldn't respond. I couldn't summon even an ounce of strength.
"Hold still, or your death is going to be a lot more painful."
Just as the tip of the blade brushed my skin, there was a deafening crash as the door was kicked violently open. Victoria flinched, her head snapping toward the entrance, face tight with panic.
Jason stood in the doorway, eyes wide with shock, his brows furrowed as he stared at the knife in Victoria's hand.
Relief flooded me, and I locked eyes with him, silently begging for help.
"Miss Bennett, you shouldn't do this. If Boss finds out, he'll be furious," Jason said, his head bowed as he warned her.
Victoria clearly couldn't have cared less.
If anything, she huffed a relieved breath. "Then let's find out, shall we? See just how mad he'll really get."
Her grin twisted into something even more terrifying, her eyes sharp with bloodlust. She let out a string of cold sneers at the open doorway, then waved a hand to summon a handful of waiting bodyguards.
"No one gets in my way.
"Tie her down."
The bodyguards hauled me up off the table in an instant. The rough movement tore at my open wound, and a searing, white-hot pain shot through me. All I could do was whimper, too weak to even scream for help.
They wrenched my arms and legs apart, strapping each limb tight to the four corners of the operating table. My breath came in shallower and shallower gasps, until I couldn't even force out a single word of protest.
I stared up at Jason, my eyes wide and pleading, silently begging him to step in and save me.
His jaw tightened, and he took one step forward.
Victoria snapped, "Don't you dare!"
Jason froze mid-step.
Victoria picked up a pair of surgical scissors and slowly sliced through my hospital gown. The sharp, cold blades nicked my skin as they cut.
She jammed the tip of the scissors straight into my open wound, then twisted it hard.
The pain was so excruciating I thrashed against my restraints, tears spilling from my eyes and streaming down my cheeks.
"Hold still, and it won't hurt as badly. I don't want you to die right away. Then I won't get to torture you properly, will I?"
I bit down hard on my teeth, forcing myself to endure the agony.
I knew exactly why Victoria hated me so much. She and Lucian were childhood sweethearts. If I had never shown up, they would have been a perfect couple.
She'd tried to kill me more times than I could count, but she'd never succeeded. Now that she'd finally caught me, there was no way she'd let me off the hook.
Jason said anxiously, "Miss Bennett, don't do this!
"You need to look at this first!"
He pulled out my phone, tapped furiously at the screen to pull up my family group chat, and held the display up for Victoria to see.
I could hear the chat pinging nonstop.
