Victoria swatted the phone away with a sharp flick of her wrist.
"Shut your mouth!"
"Wait, Miss Bennett. Ms. Cross has a very special background. I really advise you not to do this!
"Her family are no ordinary people."
Jason started trying to talk her down.
He barely got the words out before Victoria cut him off, sharp and annoyed. "What about her family? Are they some big deal hotshots or something?
"Jason, whose side are you even on? Do you work for Lucian or not?"
Jason snapped his mouth shut immediately. He thought for a quick second, then said, "You should at least take a look before you decide what to do."
After Jason's repeated warnings, Victoria frowned.
Looking confused, she bent down to grab the phone off the floor. I was so drained of strength I could only lift a finger to point at her.
"Give me back my phone..."
My voice was so faint I could barely hear it myself.
"Ms. Cross has already sent a location ping. Her family are already on their way. I think we should get a doctor to treat her first."
Jason started to explain.
Victoria's fingertips brushed the surface of the phone.
"Jason, how much did Elena pay you to buy into this nonsense?"
Just then, Lucian's voice cut through the tense air of the room.
Victoria had just touched the phone and hadn't even gotten a look at the screen. She tossed it right back onto the floor, stood up, and stomped on it twice hard enough to make a loud crunch.
Lucian stepped into the operating room, his face dark as a storm cloud.
His gaze immediately zeroed in on my wound, his brows pulled tight in clear annoyance. "Who did this?"
My lips were cracked and dry. I tried to speak, but no sound came out.
Lucian walked over to me, leaned down close, and asked again, "What happened here?"
I couldn't say a word. I just lifted my hand and pointed straight at Victoria.
Victoria panicked instantly. Tears sprang to her eyes immediately, and she threw herself straight into Luciano's arms. "I only came to check on her, but I never thought she'd lunge at me and bite my hand!
"I'm starting to wonder if she is even human at all."
Victoria sobbed dramatically, her face streaked with tears as she held up her hand for Luciano to see.
The blood on her hand was still fresh, left there when she'd sliced my coat open just a minute before.
Jason spoke up at once, "Boss, look at Ms. Cross's clothes!"
"Her wound was at risk of infection, so I kindly cut it open to make it easier for the doctor to perform surgery."
Victoria lied and clung to Lucian, letting out a whimper of raw, hurt sobs.
She buried her face against his chest, crying harder and harder.
Luciano turned his gaze to me, clearly waiting for an explanation.
My throat was raw and hoarse, and even trying to make a single sound sent searing, bone-deep pain through me.
Jason cut in, "That's not how it went, Boss, Ms. Cross..."
Victoria fisted Lucian's shirt and kept sobbing, "Thank God you're here! Jason was teaming up with Elena to trick me, even using her family to threaten me."
I had just forced out, "It was her..."
Luciano cut me off sharply, his face dark with anger. "Enough! Elena, I can't believe you're still like this, throwing a fit at Victoria over such a trivial thing.
"I can't stand threats," Luciano said, his voice ice-cold.
I forced my eyes up to look at him. The pain was so intense that cold sweat beaded all over my forehead, and I had no idea how much longer I could hold on.
Jason noticed how badly I was deteriorating and said, "Boss, let's get Ms. Cross into surgery first. She might not make it much longer.
"Besides, her family will be here any minute... If they see her like this, it won't end well."
Jason delivered the pointed reminder as he bent to grab the phone off the floor.
"Who the hell do you work for?!" Lucian roared and lunged forward, kicking Jason hard in the chest and sending him crashing to the ground. The phone clattered across the floor and landed right at Victoria's feet.
The screen cracked with a sharp crunch, spiderwebbing with fractures.
Victoria shot me a cold, sneering smirk, looking like she'd already locked in her win.
My blood kept pouring out of my wound. My chest rose and fell in ragged gasps, and I could feel my body heat slipping away by the second.
"Boss, she really can't hold on much longer. We have to get her into surgery now," Jason urged, his eyes fixed on me with raw worry.
"If we don't have her operated right away, the consequences will be catastrophic."
Victoria immediately latched onto Lucian's arm. "I have already talked to the doctor, honey. He said it's nothing serious. She just got a little spooked.
"Who knows if they're not just putting on a show to trick you again?
"Elena is clearly an orphan. She's even making up family members out of thin air...
"She hurt me, too. It still hurts so bad."
She leaned her head against Lucian's chest, sniffling softly.
Lucian's face was blank as ice. He flicked a cold, dismissive glance my way. I stretched out a trembling hand toward him, begging for help. "Doctor... Now."
"Since the doctor said you won't die, we're getting Victoria treated first."
"Lucian, you will regret this!"
I screamed the words through closed eyes, raw with despair. A cough tore through my throat, bringing up a mouthful of blood, before I went limp, collapsing back onto the operating table.
Lucian turned to leave with Victoria.
I curled my fingers into a tight fist, clinging to the last flicker of life I had.
Bang! The door slammed open, and a gust of cold wind whooshed into the room.
Three massive wolves stood in the doorway, jaws bared to show rows of sharp, glistening fangs. Their oppressive, menacing aura filled the entire operating room.
