Chapter 5

The human rush hour always felt like a sensory nightmare but right now, it was a shield. I burst from the subway stairs three blocks away from the Astra City Corporate Daycare, my lungs burning, my wet clothes clinging to my skin like ice. The freezing rain was coming down in sheets now washing away the last traces of the silver-lavender perfume. I could feel my raw natural omega scent beginning to bleed through, that soft, vulnerable undertone of sweet cream and vanilla that marked me as a target. ‘Hurry. Just hurry.’ I checked my phone. 5:22 PM. The digital screen was cracked from when I had slammed against the fire door, the battery icon flashing a critical red. The daycare was located on the ground floor of a converted brownstone building, tucked discreetly between a high-end law firm and a boutique coffee shop. To the human world, it was an elite expensive facility for working professionals. To me, it was a fortress where Leo could blend into the background. I threw open the heavy glass doors, the warmth of the interior hitting me alongside the cheerful chaotic sounds of toddlers playing and bright finger-paint murals on the walls. The contrast to the cold, concrete stairwell I had just escaped was massive. "Oh, Elena dear, look at you! You’re absolutely drenched," the receptionist, a kind, middle-aged woman named Martha said, her eyes widening as she took in my discombulated appearance. "Is everything alright at Apex?" "A sudden... corporate emergency," I gasped out, forcing my voice into a lower register so it wouldn't betray the sheer blinding terror vibrating in my chest. "The servers went down and I had to run to make the train. Where is Leo?" "He’s in the quiet corner with his blocks," Martha said, gesturing toward the back room. "He’s been such a good boy today. He kept telling the other kids that his mommy was going to take him on an adventure tonight." My throat tightened. ‘An adventure.’ I had told him that this morning as a precaution, a desperate safety net in case things went sideways. I hadn't realized how prophetic those words would be. I walked quickly into the playroom, Leo was sitting on a soft foam mat, completely absorbed in building a towering structure out of wooden blocks. He had my dark hair but as he looked up at the sound of my footsteps, his eyes caught the light. Storm grey. The exact unyielding shade of Kaelen’s eyes. "Mommy!" Leo squealed, abandoning his blocks and scrambling to his feet. He threw his small arms around my wet legs, completely unbothered by the dampness of my clothes. "You're early! Are we going on the big train now?" "Yes sweetie," I whispered, kneeling down and pulling him into a tight, fierce embrace. The moment my skin touched his, my maternal instincts flared, wrapping around him like a protective blanket. But as I held him a cold dread pooled in my stomach. Leo was almost four years old now. His Lycan genes were still mostly dormant but under intense excitement or fear, his aura would fluctuate. To a human, he just seemed like an incredibly perceptive, energetic child. To Kaelen or Beta Vance, he would smell like royal lineage. His blood carried the specific, heavy resonance of the Northern Court’s dominant Alpha line. If an enforcer got within twenty feet of him, the secret would be dead. "Let’s get your backpack, Leo. We have to be very quick," I said, keeping my voice bright and calm as I zipped up his small neon-green bag. "Okay!" he said, grabbing his favorite stuffed wolf, an ironic comfort object I had bought him before I understood the full weight of what he was – and stuffing it under his arm. I walked back out to the reception desk, nodding a quick goodbye to Martha. "Thank you, Martha. We might be out of town for a few weeks visiting family." "Have a safe trip, dear!" she called out. The moment we stepped back outside into the torrential rain, the atmosphere of the street had changed. The casual human pedestrian traffic was still there, but at the intersection of 4th and Elm, a black executive SUV with tinted windows was sitting right at the curb. Two men in dark trench coats stood under the awning of the coffee shop across the street. They weren't looking at the menu. They were scanning the crowd, their postures completely stiff, their bodies tracking movement with the unnatural, synchronized precision of pack sentries. ‘Kaelen’s enforcers.’ They had tracked my path from the subway. They didn't know exactly where I had gone, but they were closing the perimeter. "Mommy, your hand is cold," Leo muttered, his small fingers squeezing mine. "It’s just the rain, baby," I said, pulling my hair low over my face and shifting Leo to my left side, using my body to shield him from the line of sight of the men across the street. "We’re going to play a game now. It’s called 'The Invisible Game.' We have to walk very quietly to the train station, and we can’t look at anyone. Can you do that for me?" Leo nodded solemnly, his grey eyes wide with a maturity that broke my heart. "Like a ninja." "Exactly like a ninja." We walked down the block, moving away from the black SUV. The central train station was four blocks north, if we could make it into the main terminal, the sheer volume of human bodies and diesel exhaust from the tracks might mask Leo's scent long enough for us to board the 5:45 PM regional express. But as we crossed the second intersection, the wind shifted. The rain slatted sideways, carrying a sudden, sharp spike of pheromones through the air – the bitter, aggressive scent of a hunting Beta. I looked back. One of the men under the awning had stopped. His head snapped in our direction, his nostrils flaring as he caught the faint, unmasked vanilla of my omega scent through the rain. He nudged his partner, pointing directly at my wet, dark hair. "Elena! Stop!" a voice shouted over the roar of the thunder. "Run, Leo!" I screamed instinctively, abandoning the invisible game entirely. I scooped Leo up into my arms, his small body heavy against my chest and lunged forward into the crowd. I didn't care about looking human anymore, I didn't care about dignity. I sprinted up the concrete steps of the Astra City Central Station, the massive granite pillars of the facade looming ahead like a sanctuary. Behind us, the crowd began to part violently as the two enforcers plowed through the humans, knocking people aside with brutal, supernatural strength. Screams of outrage echoed from the sidewalk behind me as humans were shoved to the pavement. I burst through the grand arched entrance of the train terminal. The station was a massive vaulted cavern of iron and glass, filled with the roar of announcements, the clatter of departure boards, and thousands of travelers rushing to their gates. "Mommy, they're chasing us!" Leo cried, burying his face into my neck, his little fingers gripping my wet collar. "I’ve got you, Leo. I’ve got you," I panted, my legs shaking with exhaustion as I scanned the departure board. ‘Gate 14. Track 9. Regional Express West.’ I ran toward the security turnstile, pulling my cracked phone from my pocket to scan the barcode. The digital screen flickered, the battery percentage dropping to 1%. "Come on, please, just work once," I begged, slamming the glass face against the optical reader. The scanner beeped red. ‘Error.’ Behind me, at the main entrance of the terminal, the glass doors swung open with tremendous force. The noise of the station seemed to drop as a massive, suffocating pressure rolled into the room. I turned my head. Kaelen had arrived. He stood at the top of the terminal steps, his charcoal coat dripping with rain, his silver-handled cane clicking once against the marble floor. His storm-grey eyes swept the crowded station with absolute terrifying clarity, and the moment his gaze locked onto the far side of the terminal where I stood, the gold in his eyes flared like a dying star. He didn't just smell me now. He saw me. And right there, nestled against my shoulder was a little boy with his exact same face. The phone in my hand died completely, the screen turning black. We were trapped at the gate.
