Mask of charity

967 Words
The chandeliers in the Grand Imperial Hotel blazed with a thousand crystals, casting golden light over the sea of gowns and tuxedos. The city’s elite gathered beneath them, laughter and champagne filling the air. Tonight’s charity gala was not just an event—it was a stage. And Celine Fallon walked onto it as though she owned it. Her gown was black silk, cut to perfection, flowing around her like shadows come alive. Diamonds glimmered at her throat, but it was her poise—cool, untouchable—that drew every gaze. The cameras flashed, the whispers spread. “Is that her? The Fallon heiress everyone’s talking about?” “She looks like a queen.” “No wonder Chen can’t let her go.” Celine smiled faintly, letting the words roll over her. Every step was calculated. Every tilt of her chin told the world she was no longer the naive woman betrayed five years ago. She was here to win. “Miss Fallon.” The voice sent a ripple of unease through the hall. He was here. Liams Chen. Tall, immaculate in a tailored black suit, his presence dominated the room. Conversations faltered, cameras whirred. For a moment, it was as though the gala itself bent around him. And his eyes—sharp, unreadable—locked only on her. “Mr. Chen,” Celine said coolly, inclining her head. “Surprised to see you here. Or perhaps not.” Liams’ lips curved, but the smile never touched his eyes. “I told you not to be late.” His words carried like a claim, and the crowd stirred. Whispers buzzed. The headlines practically wrote themselves. Celine tilted her glass, her voice calm. “You presume too much. We are nothing to each other.” The statement cut clean, but Liams only stepped closer, his gaze like a storm. “Nothing?” he echoed softly, for her ears alone. “Then why do you tremble when I stand this close?” Her spine stiffened. Damn him. Before she could retort, a new voice slid smoothly between them. “Miss Fallon.” Derek Zhou. Effortlessly charming, with a grin that disarmed and a gaze that lingered a second too long. He extended his hand to her. “You look breathtaking tonight. May I steal a dance?” The cameras snapped wildly. Celine’s lips curved into a slow, deliberate smile. Perfect. “Of course.” She placed her hand in Derek’s, letting him lead her toward the dance floor. Every step was deliberate—a rejection of Liams in front of the entire city. Gasps rippled through the crowd. Headlines would explode tomorrow: “Fallon Heiress Chooses Zhou Heir Over Chen CEO?” Exactly as she wanted. — The waltz began, violins swelling through the ballroom. Derek held her lightly, his smile edged with mischief. “You’re playing with fire,” he murmured. “I know.” Her voice was steady. “And Chen doesn’t strike me as the type to lose gracefully.” Celine’s gaze flicked past Derek’s shoulder. Liams stood at the edge of the floor, hands in his pockets, his expression unreadable. But his eyes—those dark, burning eyes—never left her. “He already set the fire,” Celine whispered back. “I’m just choosing how it burns.” Derek chuckled, spinning her. “Then allow me to be your shield, at least for tonight.” She gave him a cool smile. “I don’t need saving, Mr. Zhou. Just an audience.” — When the dance ended, applause filled the hall. Derek bowed slightly, lips brushing her knuckles. Cameras flashed again, capturing the picture of a perfect pair. But before she could retreat, a shadow loomed. Liams. Without a word, he took her hand from Derek’s, his grip firm, unyielding. “She owes me this dance,” he said flatly, leaving no room for argument. The crowd gasped. Derek’s smile didn’t falter, but his eyes sharpened. “Does she?” Celine’s pulse thundered, but she lifted her chin. If she refused now, she’d look cornered. If she accepted, she risked playing into his hands. But Liams had already pulled her onto the floor. The orchestra struck another note, and suddenly she was in his arms, the world watching. — His hand pressed against her back, pulling her closer than necessary. His breath brushed her ear. “You enjoy humiliating me, don’t you?” Celine’s lips curved faintly. “Why shouldn’t I? You’ve given me every reason.” His eyes narrowed. “And yet…” His voice lowered. “Your heart races when I touch you.” She tried to pull back, but his grip tightened. The movement looked like a lover’s embrace, but the steel in it was unmistakable. “To them,” he murmured, his gaze sweeping over the flashing cameras, “this looks like desire. Not defiance.” Her chest tightened. Damn him. Even her resistance was twisted into his weapon. “You think you’ve won,” she hissed. “I haven’t even begun,” Liams replied, his voice like velvet steel. “You can play your games, Celine. But in the end… you’ll still be mine.” The music swelled, drowning her furious silence. Around them, the crowd watched, spellbound by the drama unfolding live. And when the song ended, Liams didn’t release her. Instead, he lowered his head, lips brushing dangerously close to her ear. “Tomorrow,” he whispered, “you’ll understand just how far I’m willing to go.” Then, before she could respond, he released her and walked away, leaving her standing in the center of the ballroom. Every camera captured it. Every whisper spread. Celine’s fingers tightened around her glass. If he thought she would bow… he was mistaken. This war was only beginning.
