Chapter 8: The Crimson Coven

1222 Words
Julian stood up from the velvet sofa, his movements entirely silent as he stepped away from the sleeping huntress. He pulled a fresh, dark silk shirt over his broad shoulders, his eyes never leaving the tall glass windows. Outside, the storm was fading, but the air felt heavy with a suffocating, familiar presence. His own kind had arrived. With a single, fluid motion, Julian vanished from the room, appearing on the grand stone balcony. The wind whipped his dark hair against his forehead as he looked down at the courtyard below. Standing near the iron gates were three tall, pale figures wrapped in expensive, tailored coats. They didn't move like humans. They stood perfectly still, their crimson eyes reflecting the moonlight. "Julian," a smooth, melodic voice drifted up to the balcony, carrying effortlessly through the night air. It was Victoria, his coven's high-ranking enforcer, and his former sire's favorite companion. "You have been absent from our gatherings for too long. And the scent coming from your mansion... it smells of silver and human blood." Julian gripped the stone railing, his fingers leaving deep cracks in the solid marble. "You are trespassing on my territory, Victoria. Turn back before I forget our shared history." Victoria let out a sharp, mocking laugh, stepping into the light of the courtyard lamps. Her beautiful, porcelain face distorted with a sudden, vicious hunger. "The Council knows what you did in Beyoğlu, Julian. You didn't just feed on a human. You brought a high-ranking weapon of the Order into your sanctuary. You brought a virus into our world." Before Julian could answer, the heavy wooden doors of the balcony creaked open behind him. Camilla stood there, the heavy fur blanket wrapped tightly around her shoulders, her dark eyes wide as she took in the scene below. Her training instantly kicked in; she could recognize the sheer, suffocating aura of high-tier ancients from a mile away. Her hand instinctively searched her waist for a weapon she no longer possessed. "Go back inside, Camilla," Julian commanded, his voice dropping into a terrifyingly low, absolute tone. "Is that her?" Victoria hissed from below, her crimson eyes locking onto Camilla with pure, undiluted hatred. In a fraction of a second, Victoria’s fangs extended, and she crouched low, preparing to launch herself up the three-story wall. "An ancient predator playing house with a little human doll. The Council wants her head, Julian. Move aside, or we will take yours too." Julian didn't look back at Camilla. He simply stepped in front of her, his massive frame completely blocking her from view as his own eyes flared into a brilliant, blinding red. "Let them try," he growled. Victoria launched herself upward, a blur of shadow and fabric that defied gravity. She scaled the vertical stone facade in a heartbeat, her clawed fingers digging into the masonry. The two enforcers at the gate moved simultaneously, vanishing from the courtyard and reappearing as twin shadows rushing the lower levels of the estate. The sound of shattering glass echoed from the drawing room below, signaling their brutal entry. Julian met Victoria at the apex of her leap. As her boots cleared the marble balustrade, her claws aimed directly for Camilla's throat. Julian intercepted her mid-air. He grabbed her wrists with a bone-crushing grip, the kinetic impact of their collision sending a shockwave through the balcony that cracked the glass doors behind them. "You forget your place, Victoria," Julian hissed, the sheer weight of his ancient aura pressing down on her like a physical vice. Victoria snarled, her jaw unhinging slightly as she tried to snap at his face. "You have forgotten yours! You bleed for a mortal! You are a disgrace to the bloodline!" With a desperate surge of unnatural strength, she kicked against his chest, forcing him to release her. She touched down lightly on the railing, balancing with feline grace, her eyes darting past him to Camilla. Camilla didn't freeze. The lack of a silver blade made her vulnerable, but not helpless. Recognizing the vulnerability of her position on the open balcony, she dropped the heavy fur blanket, using the split-second distraction to dive back into the bedroom. Her eyes scanned the dark room, locating a heavy, iron-poker beside the hearth. It wasn't silver, but solid iron could still disrupt a vampire's focus if struck with enough force. Behind her, the balcony structure groaned. Julian had slammed Victoria into the outer wall, the impact dislodging heavy stone tiles that plummeted into the darkness below. "Camilla! Run!" Julian’s voice echoed, strained by the effort of holding back an enforcer of Victoria's caliber while sensing the other two intruders closing in from inside the house. The bedroom door burst open before she could even reach the hearth. One of Victoria’s companions, a lean vampire with shaved silver hair and eyes completely consumed by dark veins, stood in the doorway. He sniffed the air, a grotesque smile spreading across his pale face as the scent of her blood hit his senses. "The huntress," he whispered, his voice a dry rasp. "A fine prize for the Council." He lunged with terrifying speed. Camilla, relying on years of muscle memory, anticipated the straight trajectory of his attack. She sidestepped, letting his momentum carry him past her, and swung the heavy iron poker into the side of his knee. The metal struck home with a sickening crack. The vampire roared in pain, dropping to one knee as the bone fractured. But his regeneration was swift. He grabbed the iron rod before she could strike again, his cold fingers ripping it from her grasp and tossing it aside like a twig. He backhanded her across the room. The force of the blow sent Camilla crashing into a wooden writing desk, splintering the frame. Pain flared through her ribs, and the metallic taste of blood filled her mouth. Before the vampire could close the distance to finish her, a shadow materialized behind him. Julian had abandoned the fight on the balcony. His hand reached through the vampire’s back, his pale arm driving straight through the leather of the attacker's coat and out through his chest. In his fist, Julian held the vampire's still-beating, blackening heart. With a cold, emotionless expression, Julian crushed it. The attacker collapsed instantly, his body turning to ash before he even hit the floor. Julian turned to Camilla, offering a hand to pull her up. His dark shirt was torn, and a deep laceration across his cheek was already knitting itself back together. "Are you alright?" "I've had worse," Camilla gasped, gripping his hand and pulling herself up, ignoring the sharp pain in her side. "Where is Victoria?" "Regrouping below," Julian said, his eyes scanning the corridor outside. "She realizes now that I will kill her without hesitation. But the third one is missing. We cannot stay here. The mansion is compromised, and the Council will send a full legion once they realize this vanguard has failed." "Where do we go?" Camilla asked, wiping the blood from her lip. Her world had completely shrunk to this room, this vampire, and the survival instinct that bound them together. "To the old port," Julian replied, his voice firm as he guided her toward a concealed door hidden behind a heavy tapestry in the corner of the room. "We leave Istanbul tonight."
