Chapter 6: The Temptation Talk

1080 Words
Bhola hadn't slept much. The prayer garden had offered her a pocket of peace last night, but her heart was still restless. She'd spent hours flipping through old journal entries, rereading letters she'd written to God in the middle of past heartbreaks. Joshua wasn't the problem. Her fear was. And yet... she couldn't ignore the thought that kept rising through the anxiety like a fragile balloon trying to stay afloat: What if he's the answer to prayers I've stopped believing in? The next day after class, Janelle handed Bhola a flyer. "Joshua's leading a new student Q&A next week," she said. "It's called 'Temptation, Trust, and Timing: A Real Talk on Relationships.' You should come." Bhola squinted at the bold text. "He's doing what?" "Yeah. Open mic style. Anyone can ask anything. Raw, no fluff. Just Scripture, experience, and honesty." Bhola's stomach twisted. "You think it's a trap?" Janelle teased. "I think it's... bold." Janelle shrugged. "Or maybe it's time someone talked about what dating as a Christian really looks like." Bhola folded the flyer and shoved it in her bag. She wasn't sure if she would go. But she knew she'd be thinking about it all week. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Joshua sat across from Andre at the student café two days later, green tea in hand, his Bible open between them. "I'm nervous," he admitted. "You? Mr. Pure Intentions?" Andre teased. "I'm serious," Joshua said, running his hand over his curls. "We're talking about temptation. That's heavy stuff. If I'm too vague, it won't help. If I'm too honest... some folks might get uncomfortable." Andre nodded slowly. "I get it. But you always say God doesn't bless performances—He blesses obedience." Joshua half-smiled. "You been quoting me now?" "Just returning the favour." They both laughed. Joshua recovered. "If just one person hears the truth they need—just one—then it's worth it." The Night of the Q&A~~~ The student ministry room was packed. Rows of folding chairs filled the space, students sitting on the floor, leaning against the walls. Word had spread fast: Joshua wasn't going to sugarcoat anything. Sister Lorraine stood near the back, arms folded, eyes gleaming with approval. Bhola sat next to Janelle in the third row, clutching a notebook she didn't plan to write in. She told herself she came to take notes. She knew the real reason. Joshua stepped up to the mic. No slides. No flashy intro. Just him. A man with a Bible and bold peace. "Hey, everyone," Joshua began. "I appreciate you being here. Tonight's topic is uncomfortable for some, overdue for most, and necessary for all: temptation, trust, and timing in Christian relationships." Murmurs rippled through the room. "Let's start with the elephant in the room: sex." Eyes widened. Jaws shifted. Some students leaned forward. Others looked down. Joshua didn't flinch. "Yes, I said it. s*x. Desire. Temptation. These aren't unholy words. They're real experiences. The enemy loves to make us feel shame for struggling. But God isn't scared of your struggle. He just wants honesty." He looked around. "I want to be clear: purity isn't about pretending you don't want anyone. It's about surrendering that desire to the One who made it." Bhola blinked. Her heart thudded. Joshua continued. "God gave us boundaries not to punish us, but to protect what's sacred. That includes your body. That includes your heart." A guy in the back raised his hand. "What if you already messed up? Like, what if you've done stuff you regret?" Joshua looked directly at him. "Then you bring it to the Cross. You don't hide it. You don't define yourself by it. Jesus restores, not just forgives. He rewrites stories. You're not a secondhand blessing because of your past." Bhola's throat tightened. Another girl asked, "How do you date someone and stay pure when you want them so bad it hurts?" Joshua smiled, but it was tender. Not judgmental. "Whew," he said. "I've been there. The truth? You set boundaries before emotion blinds you. You don't let passion plan your proximity." He paused. "And if you fall, you don't run away from God. You run to Him. Shame isolates. Grace covers." Joshua opened the floor for one last question. To everyone's surprise—including her own—Bhola rose to her feet. Joshua's eyes locked onto hers instantly. His jaw didn't drop. His eyes didn't flash with drama. He just... listened. "My question is for the girls," she said, voice steady but low. "What if we don't trust any of you?" Some people shifted uncomfortably. Janelle gripped her arm. But Joshua didn't flinch. "I hear that," he said. "And I think that's fair." The room quieted. "There are men out there who've misused the name of God to manipulate. I'm sorry if one of us hurt you. I carry that weight—because I represent more than myself." He stepped closer to the edge of the stage. "But not every man who says 'God told me' is a predator. Some of us are praying to be protectors. Not saviours. Not knights. Just brothers willing to serve and wait." Bhola didn't move. Joshua added gently, "You don't owe us your trust. But I pray God helps you give it to the one who earns it—and reflects him well." Something in Bhola cracked. For the first time, she believed he might mean it. Later That Night~~~~ Most students trickled out slowly, talking in hushed groups. Bhola lingered near the exit, unsure whether to approach Joshua. He noticed. He didn't walk to her. He waited. She finally stepped forward. "Hey," she said quietly. "Hi, Bhola." She hesitated. "Thank you. For... all of that." "I meant every word." "I believe you," she said softly. Joshua gave a small, grateful nod. "I didn't come tonight to trap you," she said. "I came to test you." He smiled a little. "You wouldn't be the first." "But you passed," she whispered under her breath. Looking down. Joshua looked at her gently. "I wasn't trying to pass," he said. "I was just trying to be obedient." They stood in silence. Finally, Bhola said, "Can we talk sometime? Not as... prospects. Just people." Joshua nodded. "Absolutely. I'd like that." End of chapter 6~~~ Joshua's Journal – That Night "Tonight wasn't about impressing anyone. But somehow, it opened something with Bhola. I don't know where this is going. I just know I want to keep walking upright. God, guard my motives. And hers too."
