Chapter 17: A Night to Remember

547 Words
Olivia sat in front of her vanity, nervously adjusting the delicate silver necklace around her neck. Tonight was a big night—her company’s annual gala, an event she had attended countless times but never quite like this. Because tonight, she wasn’t going alone. A knock at the door made her heart leap. She took a deep breath and called, "Come in." Noah stepped inside, looking impossibly handsome in a tailored black suit. His gaze swept over her, lingering with admiration. "Wow," he murmured, taking a step closer. "You look... breathtaking." She felt warmth creep up her neck. "You clean up pretty well yourself." He grinned, offering his arm. "Shall we?" --- The gala was in full swing by the time they arrived. The grand ballroom was filled with elegantly dressed guests, chandeliers casting a golden glow over the space. Olivia spotted familiar faces—colleagues, industry executives, and friends—but it was Noah’s presence beside her that kept her grounded. As they moved through the crowd, Olivia felt the weight of curious glances. People were watching, whispering. She knew they were wondering about Noah, about the man who had captured her attention. "Ignore them," Noah said softly, as if reading her mind. "Tonight is about us." She squeezed his hand, grateful for his steady presence. "Let’s get a drink." They made their way to the bar, where Claire greeted them with an arched brow and a knowing smile. "Well, well. You two clean up nicely." Noah chuckled. "I do what I can." Claire smirked at Olivia. "And you? How are you holding up?" "So far, so good," Olivia admitted. "But the night is young." Just as she said it, a familiar voice interrupted. "Olivia." She turned, her smile faltering at the sight of Lucas—a man she had once been close to, but who now stood as a complicated reminder of her past. "Lucas," she said cautiously. "I didn’t expect to see you here." "Business obligations," he replied, his gaze flicking to Noah. "And I see you brought a date." Noah, sensing the tension, extended a hand. "Noah Carter." Lucas shook it, his expression unreadable. "Lucas Monroe. Olivia and I go way back." Noah met his gaze evenly. "So I’ve heard." Olivia cleared her throat. "Excuse us, Lucas. We were just about to grab a drink." "Of course," Lucas said smoothly, stepping aside. "Enjoy your evening." As they walked away, Olivia let out a breath. "Well, that was... awkward." Noah quirked a brow. "An ex?" "Something like that," she admitted. "It’s complicated." "Not to me," Noah said simply. "I’m here with you, Olivia. The past doesn’t change that." Her heart swelled at his words. "You always know exactly what to say." "Only when it matters." He lifted his glass. "To us?" She clinked hers against his. "To us." --- The night continued, laughter and stolen glances filling the air between them. As the gala came to a close, Noah pulled Olivia onto the dance floor. "One dance before we leave?" he asked. She hesitated, then nodded. "Just one." As they swayed to the slow melody, Olivia let herself lean into Noah’s warmth. Maybe, just maybe, she was ready for whatever came next. And with Noah by her side, she wasn’t afraid to find out.
