Jared's Dilemma: Trust or Trap?

555 Words
As the days went by, Jared's frustration with Lotti only grew. He had instructed his HR manager, Mrs Thompson, to initiate the process of terminating Miss Higgins' contract, but to his surprise, Miss Higgins seemed to have anticipated this move. One morning, as Jared was sipping his coffee and going through his emails, Mrs. Thompson knocked on his door, looking flustered. "Ah, Jared, I'm so sorry to bother you, but I have some news about Miss Higgins," she said, hesitating. "What is it?" Jared asked, his curiosity piqued. "Well, it seems that Miss Higgins has been in touch with our legal department, and she's threatening to sue us for wrongful termination," Mrs Thompson explained. Jared's eyes widened in surprise. "What? That's ridiculous! We have evidence of her sabotage". Mrs. Thompson nodded. "I know, but apparently, Miss Higgins has been keeping a record of all the 'injustices' she's suffered since she started working here. She's claiming that we're discriminating against her and that she's been subjected to a hostile work environment." Jared threw up his hands in exasperation. "This is absurd! We can't let her blackmail us like this." But Miss Higgins had already set her plan in motion. She began to make appearances at company meetings, smiling sweetly and taking notes. She offered to help her colleagues with their workload and even volunteered to work overtime. Jared was baffled by her sudden change in behaviour. Had he misjudged her all along? Was she genuinely trying to make amends and prove herself as a valuable employee? He didn't care less. It was a sunny Friday morning and Jared had just ended a seminar with the board members. Now he was walking down the hallway when he ran into Miss Higgins, who was carrying a tray of freshly baked cookies. "Hi, Mr. Jared!" she chirped, her eyes sparkling with warmth. "I baked some cookies for the team. Would you like one?" Jared hesitated, unsure of how to respond. Part of him wanted to refuse, to show her that he wasn't fooled by her sudden change in behaviour. But another part of him was curious, wondering if maybe, just maybe, Miss Higgins was genuinely trying to make a fresh start. "Ah, sure," he said finally, taking a cookie from the tray. "Thank you, Sly fox." Miss Higgins beamed with pride. "You're welcome, Mr. Jared! I'm so glad you're giving me a chance to prove myself." As Jared walked away, a cookie in hand, he couldn't shake the feeling that he was being manipulated. But he couldn't quite put his finger on what her game was. "Mrs. Thompson," he said, poking his head into her office. "I need to talk to you about Miss Higgins." Mrs. Thompson looked up from her computer, a concerned expression on her face. "What's going on, Jared?" "I don't know," Jared admitted. "But I think she's playing me. She's being too nice, too helpful. It's like she's trying to distract me from something." Mrs Thompson nodded thoughtfully. "I think you might be right, Jared. I've been noticing some strange behaviour from her too. Maybe we should keep a closer eye on her, see if we can uncover what she's really up to." Jared nodded, a plan beginning to form in his mind. "Agreed. Let's get to the bottom of this, once and for all."
