The Unspoken

*Chapter Fourteen – The Unspoken* The park bench beneath them was damp, but neither Kai nor Eliana seemed to notice as they settled into silence. Words felt fragile, like glass waiting to shatter. Eliana finally broke the quiet. “Why do you care so much?” Kai looked at her, eyes tracing the curve of her jaw, the flicker of vulnerability she rarely showed. “Because I see you,” he said simply. “Not just the surface but the pieces you hide. And I don’t want to lose what we’re starting.” Her breath hitched, heart pounding in a rhythm unfamiliar yet soothing. “But what if I mess it all up?” she whispered. Kai smiled gently, brushing a loose strand of hair behind her ear. “Then we’ll fix it. Together.” The city’s hum softened into the background, and in that moment, something unspoken blossomed between them a promise not yet spoken aloud, but felt deeply. Rain had started to fall not heavy, but soft and steady like a whisper from the clouds. Eliana didn’t move from the bench. Neither did Kai. Their shoulders brushed, warm through the cold. She laughed quietly. “We’re going to get soaked.” Kai tilted his head, grinning. “So? You afraid of a little rain?” “No,” she replied, then paused. “Just afraid of… getting used to this.” “To what?” “This feeling.” Her voice dropped. “Of being seen.” Kai didn’t respond immediately. Instead, he slipped off his hoodie and pulled it over her head gently. Their eyes met, and something charged passed between them tension and tenderness laced together. “Eliana,” he said, “you deserve to be seen. Not sometimes. Always.” The rain dripped off the edge of the bench, and her heart thudded in her chest. She wanted to kiss him. She almost did. But she didn’t. Instead, she whispered, “Thank you.” Kai nodded, as if he knew the almost was enough for now.
