The Distance Between Almost And Everything

*Chapter Sixteen – The Distance Between Almost and Everything* The next day, everything felt louder. The hallways echoed too much, her heart thudded too fast, and Kai’s absence in the usual corner of the library was too obvious. Eliana sat down anyway, books unopened, fingers tracing the spine of her notebook. It was stupid, maybe, how one moment one almost could linger like perfume on skin. She checked her phone. No messages. Not that she expected one. Kai wasn’t the type to rush feelings. That’s what she respected… and hated a little too. Because now she was stuck in between. Between knowing and not knowing. Between almost and everything. A shadow fell across her table. “You’re in my seat,” Kai said, his tone light, but his eyes tired. Eliana blinked, surprised. “Didn’t think you’d show.” “I almost didn’t.” He dropped his bag and sat. “But then I remembered… we don’t do almosts.” She smiled, slow. “So what are we doing now?” He looked at her for a long time, eyes searching hers like the answer was written across her cheekbones. “We’re figuring it out,” he said. “Together.” She nodded. And just like that, the distance between them didn’t feel so far anymore.
