*Chapter Eighteen – A Little Closer*
It was the little things.
Like how Kai started waiting for Eliana after class without making a big deal out of it. Or how she’d bring him an extra snack, claiming she "accidentally" packed two.
There were no labels no need. Their connection was writing itself, slowly, deliberately, in quiet glances and shared playlists.
One day, while walking home, the sky turned that soft golden haze right before sunset.
Eliana said, “Do you ever think about how fast everything changes?”
Kai glanced at her, then at their shadows stretching on the pavement.
“Yeah. But some things don’t feel rushed. Some things… feel right.”
She looked up at him. Not with surprise, but something deeper. Something like understanding.
They kept walking.
Their fingers didn’t touch, but the space between them was filled with something heavier than silence and softer than a promise.
They didn’t need to rush.
They were already a little closer than yesterday.
It had been building like the way thunder hums long before lightning strikes.
Kai wasn’t usually nervous. But tonight, walking Eliana home from the library, he kept adjusting the strap of his backpack, clearing his throat, then staying silent.
Eliana noticed, of course. She always did.
“You good?” she asked, slowing her pace beside him.
He looked at her, then away. “Yeah. Just… thinking.”
They stopped at her gate. The porch light flickered above them.
Eliana turned to him, arms crossed gently. “About what?”
Kai exhaled. “About how I never say what I should… when I should.”
She tilted her head. “Like what?”
He stepped a little closer, the air charged between them.
“Like how… I notice things. How you always tuck your hair behind your ear when you’re nervous. How you hum under your breath when you're concentrating. How being around you makes things feel… less heavy.”
Eliana blinked, surprised but not scared.
“I notice things too,” she whispered. “Like how you always let people think you’re okay, even when you’re not. And how you hold your breath right before you say something real.”
Kai gave a small, breathless laugh. “I’m holding it now.”
“Then breathe,” she said, barely audible.
Their eyes locked. The space between them thinned.
