*Chapter Two Frequencies*
The recording light glowed red.
Eliana’s fingers hovered above the keys, trembling slightly, but Kai didn’t rush her. He leaned back in the creaky swivel chair, headphones on, watching her through the soundproof glass, like he always did. Quietly. Carefully. Like the way you look at a star, knowing it’s light-years away, yet feeling it right there.
She played the first chord.
Soft. Uncertain. Then another.
A melody began to thread itself together, shy and searching, like her. He adjusted the levels, his heart syncing to the rhythm.
*Tap. Breathe. Play.*
The notes were messy at first. Then smoother. Then... her voice.
Kai leaned forward.
Eliana never sang in front of anyone, not even him.
**“I used to hide in silence,
Like it kept me safe inside.
But the sound between us,
Is something I can't hide…”**
Kai stared. His chest tightened, not painfully, but like something sacred was happening and he wasn’t ready for it.
When she finished, she looked up, unsure.
"Was that"
"Beautiful," he said, before she could doubt it.
Silence followed again. But this time, it was full.
Full of words they hadn’t said yet.
Full of feelings they didn’t know how to name.
The air felt fragile, like glass. He almost said what he’d been holding back for months *Stay. Please stay.* But he didn’t.
Instead, he handed her the untangled headphones.
And in the background, an old track began to play. Their first song. A raw demo. Mistakes and all.
“I forgot this existed,” Eliana whispered, listening. “We were terrible.”
He laughed. “We were honest.”
They both fell quiet again. The sound between them still soft, still searching was growing into something neither of them knew how to name yet.
But it was there.
And maybe, for now, that was enough.
